Could someone please help and tell me how to take apart the lower half from the upper half of a Johnson gt 150 1985 model #J150stlch. I have all the bolts off and the unit drops about and inch and then hangs up. Help would be appreciated greatly.

nebtnman

You have to disconnect the shift rod at the power head.

Re: Lower half disassemble GT 150

Thanks for the help. What I am trying to do is replace the adapter to powerhead gasket. Is it easyer to get to it from the top or bottom? I am also going to replace the water pump, is there anything else I need to replace while I am there?

There is a shift rod retaining screw that is located under the bottom carb, to remove, shift engine into reverse. To reach it, use a 3/8 wobbler with 1/4" drive on a 10" exstension This is from the port sideof the engine. Take a look at the upper water tube grommet's as long as your this far.

Re: Lower half disassemble GT 150

To replace the powerhead to adapter gasket (common problem, new gasket is improved) just disconnect the shift linkage, remove the powerhead bolts and nuts, then pull the powerhead off.

It would be best to refer to a service manual for not only the procedure, but for the required torque values.
