Lower Gear Unit Lube Questions

I'm new to the website and very inexperienced with boating maintenance and I was wondering about lower gear unit lube. I know it is important to watch for any white milky substance while changing it, my question is how much is too much and how white is too white (it looks grayish)? Is a little discoloration acceptable and what should I do about it? Also, how would I replace the washers/gaskets on the plugs/screws. This is for a 1993 50hp Mariner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Lower Gear Unit Lube Questions

Gear Lube comes in various colors. It tends to get dark and opaque from use. Change yours, remember the color and run it for a couple of trips and then drain it. If it is milky, you probably have a leak. Get new gaskets for the fill and drain screws. They are avail at any dealer or marine store. Johnnyrude gaskets will also work on your merc.
