we are having trouble getting the lower end back in a 850 mercury. It is not my boat so I don't know anything about this motor. It is lacking about an inch of going all the way in are we doing something wrong?

Re: Lower End

At that distance it probably the shift shaft is not lined up so it could be the spines are not alined and you will need to move the shift lever back and forth a little bit in some cases you must reach in and move the shaft around a little with needle nosed pliers your gone to have to be the judge of the problem

Re: Lower End

Did you put the unit in gear before you dropped it?

If so the shift shaft splines should be lined up.

Turn prop to line up main shaft and seat the rest of the way.

No we didn't put it in gear first. Is the shift rod the little rod that runs down the front of the lower end?

Re: Lower End

Jim, The short splined rod is the shift shaft. I usually install my LU using neutral for the LU and the MerControl. It makes it a bit easier. if you carefully use a adjustable wrench you can move it to neutral. Make sure you move it the right way.
