Question.

If I take the lower end off from my '81 Johnson 60hp and I put the garden hose with cold water to the end of the water pipe which goes to the powerhead - is it safe to start the motor and do some idle timing etc?

(I have a gearcase rebuild going on and waiting for the parts, so it would be nice fix the powerhead also a little)

greets from Finland and thanks for the excellent forum!

Markus

Markus, you would probably be wasting alot of time. You really need the lower unit on in order to get the proper back pressure that you get when the boat is in the water.

But, to answer your initial question, no it's not dangerous as long as you don't rev the motor up with no load on it. High revs with no load could lead to shrapnel from an exploding motor...
- Scott
