I have a 78 45HP that I recently purchased with my boat. owner say that he was having trouble getting in reverse. I took boat out and noticed a lot of noise when shifting into reverse. and drives forward fine till you good to kick it in pass 1/2 throttle just spins, and have to bring down and will reengage again. I have lower drive apart, but do not know what to look for as far as worn gears/bearings. Any help would be apreciated. Thanks George

Re: lower drive?

Look at attached diagram LOWER UNIT <br />Part numbers 18 rear gear, part number 24 clutch and part number25 forward gear. The blowup from this site is bad, if you have a clymor manual it shows it better. When you have the lower unit taken apart hold the clutch against the forward gear. The edges that line up should be square and not rounded. If they are rounded this is what is causing the unit to slip. If damage is not too severe a machine shop can re square the faces for you. My guess is that the reverse has a broken face or the previous owner was having slipping in the forward gear and turned the clutch around to put the worn faces to the reverse gear. This is a temporary fix and usually will cause more damage to the clutch and reverse gear.
