I removed the lower drive while it was in neutral. When I put it back the prop acts like it's in forward. Have not turned engine on. How do I correct gear alignment?

Well, if the gearcase is in forward, and the control is in neutral, you will need to remove the gearcase again and set it to neutral. After the gearcase is removed, turn the shift shaft on the gearcase CCW to put it into neutral, and then reinstall, with the control in nuetral.

Do as above.-----When removed in nuetral a slight bump puts the lower unit into forward when you are not looking.---Strong spring on the clutch dog does that.

Second on popping into forward. Mine does it all the time. Depending on your motor, you may not have to drop the LU. On my Mariner, the shift shaft uncouples via an access port in the LU. I can manipulate the gear box by pushing/pulling on the lower portion of the shift shaft while the LU is in place.
