I just picked up a 'new to me' boat a month or so ago. and finally put it in the water a couple weekends ago - the boat has been sitting in the water for a couple weeks, with a couple hours or so of use in the meantime... A few days in, the audible alarm sounds, I noticed the drive oil reservoir had dipped in level, so I topped the reservoir bottle and carried on. That Sunday night, we leaving the cabin to come back home for the workweek, and then back up there again this past weekend...

( Now, being a new to me boat, and its first run of the summer, and the previous owner changed the drive oils last fall, I hoped/wanted/wished it to be simply an air lock in the system, and the oil level would soon stabilize.. reading online that it the reservoir can drop in levels of almost its entire capacity..)

Well, after this past weekend, and noticing the reservoir oil level dropped again I finally pulled the boat out of the water to take a look.
Pulled the boat from the water, up onto the lot at the launch, and First glance at the leg I realized the immediate problem.

The drain lug in the leg has fallen out, and oil from the reservoir bottle has simply flown right through the bottom of the leg, out the drain hole.

Now the Question. (and I really don't want to hear the answer here, But I need to know the answer here).
Boat, sitting in water for a couple weeks, drain plug fallen out, reservoir oil bottle being topped up as needed. w minimal use of the boat over the past couple weekends....
How bad of a situation am I into? Next steps? Advise?

As said above, its now sitting on the trailer, at the cabin, a few hours drive away from me.

Sorry but this isn't good, and actually think it needs to come apart. But lets hope it's OK,

I would suggest: First you need to refill it with lube, start it on the trailer and let it run for 5 or 10 minutes on muffs. Listen for anything that doesn't sound right. Shut it down and drain the lube and strain it through cheese cloth or something fine. Your looking for metal. It will probably have some water (milk) maybe in it.

Welcome,
It might be ok if the amount draining was replenished by the reservoir.

You should drain it and refill it with the proper oil and see what happens.

What did the oil that was draining out look like?

The fluid draining out, and puddling in the parking lot was a milky white/light blue puddle.
I'm hoping I can buy/replace the drain plug, Flush it out, refill the drive and run it onshore with muffs on for a few minutes.. see if anything seems/sounds out of the ordinary.

What oil were you using? You might be lucky. Oil is less dense than water so, in theory, no oil should have come out. And if no oil got out, no water should have got in.

It had a blue drive oil in it (assuming Mercuiser High Performance lube oil), was topped up with blue Mercury Quicksilver HP gear lube.
the thought of oil being lighter than water, and 'floating' inside the drive keeping water out has crossed my mind...

A little confused...was there still lube in the drive/reservoir when you pulled it out? Better odds with that scenario than if it was sitting in the water empty for a prolonged period.

Well, look at it this way: The reservoir is above the outdrive and gravity has the oil was flowing in the top and out of the bottom of the outdrive. That should mean that it kept a lot of the water out, as long as there was oil in the tank, so you may be OK. Like the others said, let it drain completely, refill with new oil and see how it works, recheck the oil and if milky, change it again. You can get a new plug from your local dealer or on line. Make sure it has the gasket with it, and make sure the old gasket is not still stuck in the drain hole.
