1963 75hp Starflite. When I took out the 4 screws that attach the lower head to the retainer plate, it looked like there were simple o-rings under the heads. However, I've read that the screws don't have regular o-rings, but some kind of sealer under the heads. Has anybody ever used regular screws with o-rings there? To any success? The screws are part #307512.

You are correct, they were a one-time-use screw with a sealer pre-applied to the screw heads, not o-rings. No, I've never tried o-rings, so can't say how they might work. Seems like it wouldn't be satisfactory though. You probably would be better off simply using a suitable sealer.
