New to outboards so I haven't a clue. My outboard is blowing fuel back thru the front of the lower carb, removed it, cleaned it, reinstalled and does the same thing. It ran fine about a week ago, took it out and was running good then out of nowhere started running like crap. Any suggestion?
Do not have ID tag on transom so I don't know exactly what model it is.

I did a compression test on both cylinders, and the came back at 150 psi within 2 psi of each other. Done this a couple times and got the same results.

I also would like to know if anyone can identify this motor as the model and serial numbers have been mysteriously removed. Was told when I bought it that it is a 1999 Model Johnson 40 HP. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Below is a link to view the images to help id this motor.

I hope the link works.
Thanks,

I expect that the carbs need a proper cleaning and the floats set to the correct height. If you don't know that the carbs have been stripped, correctly cleaned and reassembled with new kits then it is a must to get done. Poor carb function will burn up a two stroke motor. This may be the cause of your problem. This is a routine service. It could be a '99.

These motors were the same as far as carburetors / induction is concerned for many , many years.----Is fuel leaking out or is it spitting out fuel and air ?-----Can you translate " running like poo " here.----What exactly is the motor doing ?

Once I get the motor running, air box removed. The lower carb spits fuel back thru front. I did speak with the mechanic that sold me the motor that it could possiblely be the reed plate on the lower carb. Other than removing carbs and intake, is there any way I can check this?
Thanks for the feedback.

Not knowing any better, it does sound like the lower reed plate is not closing properly. but I am certainly no expert either. JMHO! :noidea:

I am not really sure but it has a Bombardier logo above the Johnson logo so I would think it is newer than 1999.

It looks like if the cowl is correct to the motor. It should be between 2002 and 2005. The original poster said maybe 1999. But the color was grey in 1999. His photos show a white motor.

I'm sorry, but I am new here and haven't yet figured out how to show images yet.
I have already ordered the parts I need to replace the reeds and other gaskets, no sense doing just the one if I'm in there. I want to get this motor running correctly so I can sell it off for a larger one. It's way to under powered for the boat it's on.
Thanks for every ones input. I'll keep you posted

Ok, I pulled off the carbs, and reed boxes and I found my problem.,

Short story, I bought this motor back in May of last year. It never really ran right as I could not get the carbs tuned correctly, but it ran ok. Getting progressively worse until last week when fuel started spitting out the lower carb.

I took the advise from forum members and took it apart to inspect the reeds. I found one on the lower carb was bent up. As I rotated the boxes around for a better look, I found 4, yes 4, bolts inside, 2on the top and 2 on the bottom, one was holding the reed open. I did call the mechanic I bought the motor from and threated to ruin his business if he didn't come by to take a look at his handy work. he did offer to repair it for a fee of $85.00.

The repair cost me a whole $50.00 and 2.5 hours of my time, and half of the time I drank beer and looked at it.

Also, after a couple hours of searching, I was able to ID the motor as about a 2003-2007 by searching out decal sets for Johnson Motors.

Now I can go fishing soon as it stops raining.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions

No Title

I figured out how to post images. Here is what I found inside the reed boxes.
