Re: low tire pressure

I think you pay the dealer $58.47 to turn the light off.

Re: low tire pressure

This should work (what year do you have?) Try this
Turn the ignition to ACC or ON and turn the radio off.

Press and hold the TUNE DISP button on the radio for at least five seconds until SETTINGS is displayed.

Press SEE PSCAN up or down arrow to scroll through the main menue.

Scroll until the TIRE MON appears on the display.

Press the 1 PREV or 2 NEXT button to enter the submenu. RESET will be displayed.

Press the TUNE DISP button to reset. A chime will be heard to verify the new setting and DONE will be displayed for one second.

Once the monitor has been reset, scroll until the EXIT appears on the display.

Press the TUNE DISP button to exit programming. A chime will be heard to verify exit.

Yeah my Impala has alot of settings that are accessed via the radio too.

Thanks Bob, its a 2001. I'll give it a try. For $58.47 , it will get a piece of black tape over it first. :D

Ah yes, the black tape method of erasing warning lights. Good to see that I'm not the only one to use that method. :D

A pic of the family stuck in the cluster works also. :D

A wire drill bit works wonders on lights that won't go out. I didn't need the information but that which Bob provided is excellant. I would have never thought that that is how it is done. Thats why I read topics that I don't know about, so I can increase my knowledge.

Re: low tire pressure

Might want to have your anti lock brakes checked. These sensors are run by tire rotation. If your tire goes down then the diameter changes which senses a change in rotation speed in relation to the other tires. (someone correct me if I am wrong)

You should be able to disconnect the battery cable for 3 minutes. This will clear the trouble codes and get the light to go off. If it comes back on then a wheel sensor is possibly bad. This is not a problem unless you want the traction control and anti lock brakes to work.

My 94 Bonneville has had these lights covered for years because I am too cheap to fix the wheel sensor.

Re: low tire pressure

deputydawg, got me thinking . I am ready to replace tires due to wear. Wonder if that sensor can somehow pick up the difference in wear?

Re: low tire pressure

I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora, and GM clearly explains the procedure of resetting the tire pressure warning light in my owner's manual. It takes all of about 3 minutes to look it up in the index, and 4 seconds to perform the procedure.

I have to assume your Chevy has a similar procedure that's clearly explained in the manual. Check there before you do anything else.

Before you reset it, you want to put proper tire pressure in all 4 tires. And I'm quite certain that 44 psi is NOT the proper tire pressure for you car. Check your door jamb for the tire pressure sticker and set it to factory specs.

Re: low tire pressure

Heres how to reset it on a 2002 like Bob_VT said.
Answer

Insert the ignition key, and turn it to the ACC (accessory) position. Turn off the radio. Press the display button until Oil Life shows on the radio display. Press the seek button until Tire Pressure Monitor displays. Press the 2nd preset/#2 button. Press the display button again. The tire pressure monitor should now be reset.

Re: low tire pressure

I'm sure you're right about the wear. I have to reset after the winter tires go on because they're slightly different. The light comes on when a tire is loaded up with snow too. Damn useless feature for Texas or California or somewhere.

Re: low tire pressure

In case you suspect a wheel speed sensor out they are also easy to check. They are magnetic switches on each brake rotor. As the fins on the rotor pass through the magnets this pulls the switch closed. This is how anti lock brakes work, each time the switch closes the brakes pulse. This alos runs the traction control. If 1 wheel spins on ice or mud the sensors show that wheel turning faster and pulses that wheel brake, transfering power to the other wheel. I have seen on occasion where one wheel will spin such as on ice setting off the sensor light. The light just won't go back off until reset.

Use an ohm meter or continuity testor. Touch both leads from the switch while turning the wheel. If it shows a circuit opening and closing then the switch is good.

Tire wear could make a difference if the wear is very noticable. Do check the tire pressure on the door for your series tire. My 94 Bonneville is supposed to run around 42psi, so your probably correct.

Re: low tire pressure

Thanks everyone, I printed out your posts and put it in the glove box for future use. My wife is the main driver so I dont get involved till a light goes on or a funny noise is heard. The light went off via the radio reset. Nothing on the door jamb, found it on the trunk lid. Tire press. 30psi cold. set them all at 30 , see what happens. DD, thanks for the info on the sensors, If any more problems I will use your guide to trouble shoot.
