Low speed idle open 5-6 turns

I have a 1980 johnson, 35hp. After several weeks of frustration and new parts (ignition, rebuilt the carb, etc) I finally got the thing to run (really well). It starts easy, idles at low RPM (and smooth) and accelates under load just fine. Here is the confusing part. I had to adjust the slow speed idle by opening it 5 or 6 turns and re-adjust the sync. I know this is not correct but if it runs great, should I care? The only thing I can think of is: when I rebuilt the carb, I could not locate the original bushing/bearing inside the slow speed needle housing. I assumed that someone forgot to install one the last time the carb was re-built (several owners). Could two of these bearings/bushings be restricting the passage forcing me to open the needle valve more? I suppose the passage could still be gunked up too. Can incorrect idle mixture be compensated for by adjusting the sync? Any comments? I am temped to finish out the fishing season and then worry about it this winter.

If it's running good like you say, I would leave it alone for now anyway. (Most motors will run fast, but it takes a good running one to run slow). As long as it's not running too lean (coughing at idle) you should be fine.
