I lost the screw that goes where the arrow points in the picture. This is a mercruiser 1974 transom piece. Does anyone know the specifications of the screw or know of a diagram showing the screw and it's specifications. And where to find one?
Thanks

Re: Lost Screw on transom

And the other question I have, I replaced my shifter cable and adjusted it so it was shifting fine while on land with the motor running on muffs but when I took it on the water it was a pain in the butt to shift. Felt like it was locked in gear for forward and reverse. It sometimes stuck in gear when shifted to neutral and for the most part it was stuck in forward or reverse with a lot of effort to go either way and I could only get it in neutral sometimes. I had pulled the engine out for work this summer which is when I replaced the shifter cable too.

There is no screw in the location indicated, it's just a depression. If you are referring a little lower, that is a grease nipple. The shifting problem sounds like the shift interrupt switch is not working..

Have a read of THIS to see how the shift interrupt system works.

Well I think I found the problem with the shift interrupter.
I cut the grounding wire while removing the engine and it didn't get re attached.
There was some type of screw there or plug that came out by being unscrewed by a flat or philips head. It's only use I found out was to seal the grease area to allow grease pumped through the nipple to go to the top swivel pin.

I cannot fit a socket into the depression to put the grease nipple on with. It was hard enough to get the screw out then and I'm going to have to put something with a screw head in. But I'm still clueless on the size and thread type.

There are others larger and smaller but the the most common Zerk fittings are the 1/4-28 and M6-1.

The smaller, 1/4 drive sockets may fit.

I was working on my boat yesterday and mine does have a slotted head plug in that location. Mine is a 1974 Mercruiser also. It should be a standard tapered plug, it also appears to be brass.

Well I tried the 2 different sized zerk fittings, neither fits.
The 1/4's thread area just fell through the hole and the larger one doesn't even act like there is a hole there.

Without this I cannot add geese to the upper pivot pin and I also have a slow water seep into the engine compartment.

Out of curiosity, I wandered out to my boat and checked it out. (74 Merc.)Can't see it very well, but there is a a slotted screw lurking in there.

I'm thinking it's probably going to be #7 on the parts list.

Now we're getting somewhere. Now if I can find someplace to order #7 from or find out the thread and length to determine a substitute.

Just google mercruiser parts; can't provide the link as I know iboats is a bit funny when it comes to that. I know they are a buisness, but don't have the part.

I believe you can provide the link as long as it doesn't link to something Iboats has too.
I found out that it is a brass screw, but I still do not know what the thread type and length is.

Her's the rest of the info: 7 22-390721 --PLUG, PIPE - GIMBAL HOUSING (click here) 22-52644 $5.11
Can't post the link because there is many parts in the link that Iboats does carry. Sorry. May want to try your local Mercruiser dealer.
