Sometimes if you have high weight cold oil it doesnt flow out of the passages fast enough to replenesh the oil pan. it will just fill the valve covers, starving the pump. if there is a high volume pump on there it may do just that. high volume pumps are not recommended for thick oil anyways, the force required to turn the pump often twists and breaks the pump drive shaft.

i belive its a stock pump. I did put the 10-40 back in and still nothing. The gauge reads good i can hear the engine has no oil pressure at all. Going to try to pull the shaft later and see what it looks like.

The majority of engine wears occurs within the first several seconds of engine start up just as oil is starting to flow. This is where you want maximum protection and you will not get it from a staight 30W, let alone anything higher. Car manufactueres realized this years ago and changed the spec to 5W30 as preferred, even some are leaning towards 5W-20 grades as mandatory. They warranty their engines to 160,000KM using this oil spec. Any car engine driving in very hot stop and go traffic is running way hotter and under more stress than any boat out on the water. Merc and Volvo are still in the 60's with their oil specs. Even Volvos synthetic 30W flows too slow when cold. Compare it against a multigrade when pouring out of a bottle. The higher mult grades and single grades may be ok for California and Texas when its 90F out there but in cooler climes I believe a multigrade such as 5W-40 is the way to go. Plus its only in the engine for no more than a few months or a 100 hours so shear breakdown really isn't a factor.

I don't see how you are going to be able to pull the shaft out unless you pull hard enough to slide the keeper all of the way off and drop it into the oil pan. I would drop the pain, install a new oil pump/shaft, and go on your way.
