lost drain plug in lower unit while running

i was running today and my engine started bogging and acting overheated so i stopped inspected and fished a while. when i left boat would only get up to about 1/4 speed and making some noises so i reinspected and found lower unit drain plug missing and 0 oil my question is is my lower unit shot or do i have a chance it may still work if i fill it up with oil???? at home in the drive it goes in gear and prop turns by hand and cranks engine over in nuetral it still free spins

ps. does anyone know size of drain plug it is the lower plug and motor is an 80 or 81 mercury 20 hp

Time will tell, fill it, run in a barrel, if it sounds good drain and refill again.

Go to a Merc dealer and buy a new plug, and gasket.

Probably going to need to replace bearings. Better get new seals too. They're gonna be toast after running without any lube.
