Re: lossing Hub Protectors? Help!

Never yet lost one, but I don't over fill and I clean the grease out of the area where the BB inserts into before assembly. Not sure if it really hurts much if it otherwise fits right, but a film of grease between the hub bore and the BB can't be helping it stay put. Grease guns of any sort can put a HUGE amount of force pushing that apart. I once had to use an ordinary grease gun to adjust the tension on a caterpillar (bulldozer) track. Tightened that sucker right up, and kept it there against an occasional few tons of force. Clever, simple hydraulic adjuster is all it amounts to. Overfilling has to be a major factor, IMO.

Re: lossing Hub Protectors? Help!

Thanks again for all the replies! Since I started this post I have not lost another protector. The one that seem to work for me, was to jack the wheel up and spin wheel to see if it was evenly installed. To my surprise with wheel on the ground they were not in all the way or even. I would have sworn they were in tight. To much grease or heat build up never seemed to be the answer since most all prtectors have a bleed hole. Who knows , for now proplem solved. Thanks Krusher

Don't take this as advice, just relating my experience:
I never heard of bearing buddies before now, and my 24-year old trailer hasn't had them for at least 4 years and probably more (it's only been mine for a few months). When Dad gave it to me he told me I needed to grease the wheels every 2-3 times I had it on the road. Doubt very seriously if the insides of those hubs have seen the light of day in many years. I've made two round trips over two hundred miles since I've had it plus numerous local trips. It's not a real heavy boat - probably under 1000 lbs motor included - if that makes any difference.

I'm not advocating this approach - you guys have convinced me - just bringing it up in case you ever have to decide whether to cancel another fishing trip.

anyway I appreciate all the advice.

jtw

jtexas,

Consider yourself lucky.

Not too many years ago, my neighbor passed by the house with his 15 ft. alum. and a 35 Rude in tow-light boat. I noticed strange noises coming from the trailer.

I watched him stop in the street (one house down) and proceed to back the boat into the driveway. As soon as he started backing, both wheels fell off and the trailer landed on its axle.

I have to admit, it was funny. It wouldn't have been at 70 mph.

In desperation I tied mine on with wire tied to opposing wheel nuts. Worked well. Very cheap.

I like the set screw idea. I may have to replace a hub this week. Either way both set of bearings will be repacked.

TakeEm

i don't have bering buddys on my trailer, but i heard somewhere that,or i think i heard that you are supposed to put your wheel seals in backwards (let grease out and keep water out) otherwise when you pump them up you pressurize the hub & thats what makes the BBs come off.
let me know what you think
dgassy :)
