Hello...I have a 98 Mariner, 150 hp on my Crest Pontoon boat. I took it out 2 days ago, and it seems like something is holding it back. It doesnt get up to full speed, and the RPM barely reach 5000, sometimes not reaching 5000. I changed the plugs, and it didnt make a difference. It doesnt seem to be running bad, a little shake at idle, but Im pretty sure it always did that. It just seems to no be able to get up to full speed, like its starving for gas. Any help would be appreciated. I just dont know much about boat motors. Thanks!

Re: Losing power

First you need to test spark intensity , pass/fail to determine if yours is a weak ignition or a fuel related problem.

Search this site for Joe Reeves spark gap tester. Joe posted directions for building your own tester, it is a REQUIRED tool, very effective in determining what direction to proceed with diagnosing engine problems.

Repost the results of your test and one of us will advise you how next to proceed.

CAUTION, if it is a lack of fuel problem, continued operation may have very serious piston damage from lean burn heating/melting pistons.
