Re: losing power 84 35 hp j/e

(i quit rebuilding fuel pumps.)

why?

the compression was good last year like low 110's

the motor has tons of power, its pushing a 16 flat bottom cajon special.

just acts like its running out of fuel until i back off a lil. i'm going to buy a test gauge and test the fuel pressure. the books show I should have
1 psi at 600,
1.5 at 2500-3000 and
2.5 at 4500.
I just want to rule the pump out before i pull the carb back off. I was thinking of trying to clean the jet with a wire while its still on the motor. was size orifice is the jet on a 35 hp?

Compression should be about 125 psi or better. You may have an ignition component going south as it heats up. Get an OMC manual for the 35 (Ebay) and check the ignition. You can check everything but the powerpack with an Ohm meter (see the OMC manual). Are there any cracks in the coils, arcing under load?

Thanks for your help,
I Bought all new Elec parts today, I will post up if the new part are the answer, or if the money pit just got bigger....lol
I reworked the link and sink, The local boat shop said my RPM could be off as much as 200rpm if the is no back pressure. (he also wanted to know how I checked the rpm.)

How do other people check it?

torbjorn<
I was just throwing that number out there. sorry about that. about 18 mo. ago I over heated it and had to replace the head gasket. the compression was good then and I most use the boat to duck hunt a few times a year.
Tue the boat was running like a new one for about 20 min.so I'm not concerned
about compression at this time. it will pull start with about 12" of rope.

You are right about electrical going south, I decide today after talking with my local dealer to go ahead and replace PP, sensor, charge coil.

Something is overheating and not working right...

The problem comes and goes, i think I could over look it trying to test it when its working right (long paddle back to shore)

When I go into it this time I want to rule it all out.

I just want to fishing, this is the first time in 3 years I have had a little time off to do some fishing.

Tiny tach can measure rpm, dwell/tach meter, inductive tach. Some tach's will work on 2 strokes but the reading has to be divided in half. I gotta get me one of those laser tach's, slick stuff. Just got a 14ft today, used to begging local farmers to hunt, now we hunt by boat!

Re: losing power 84 35 hp j/e

I am back, I installed the new senser, pickup coil and power pack. now I have no fire to plugs at all. I did the ground test from the book and all is ok to the point that I need a tester like the one in the OMC manual.
IT reads 5/50/500 on the right side and S/+/- on the other side.

My next test needs to be set on neg and 500. what type of tester is this? the 2 i have are digital. Does home depot sell this type or is it a dealer item?

I have had about all i can stand with this one:mad:

Throw your old PP back on and see if it comes back. Before you do make sure you didn't get a pin out of alignment on the PP connector, been there done that.

You did have spark before the replacement , correct? Thinking for testing you need a DVA and no I don't think home depot sells them.

Re: losing power 84 35 hp j/e

yes , it was running before the changes

After I could not get a ac volt reading for the charge coil I installed the old one, now i get a reading but its only 50-60 volts . the book calls for 230. is this just by pulling with the rope? still no fire at plug. this is with a digital meter.

You are right i will have to buy a DVA to test it. that's 125.00 more into the money pit... no, i think its cheaper just to buy another charge coil. guess ill look on ebay for for good used parts. lol the new ones dont work.....

Re: losing power 84 35 hp j/e

You had a setup that was producting spark, these parts are your free test equipment, don't bother buying DVA's and used this and that. Swap out one at a time until you get spark. You may have been shipped a bad component, wouldn't be the first time someone was shipped defective goods. When you installed the new parts, IE coil under the flywheel and pickup, was everything lined up properly, i'm sure there is a specific gap. What about kill circuit, is it disconnected to test for spark?

This is a cost effective DVA that will save you $100

Just go back to the basics using the old parts and you'll figure it out.

Thanks for the link. and all your help

Ok, I ordered another charge coil last night, Then I ordered the DVA adapter just now.

The coil has a machined edge it lines up with for proper installation , I did not catch this at first and tried to start the motor, it was touching> I think this may have burnt it up , i don't know why it don't work. should have new parts and tester in this week. Today im gong to reinstall all my old parts and see if it runs, I just need to know...
