loose rub rail

I noticed the other day that a small portion of my rub rail has come loose along the side of the boat. I pulled it outward a bit to take a look and I can see where about 5 or so rivets have come out. I have not noticed any water seeping yet, but I would like to fix this.

The holes seem to line up ok, so can I just put new rivets in there to tighten it back up?

Boat is an 04 bayliner 160br.

Re: loose rub rail

I would use stainless machine screws and nylock nuts if you can access the inside of the hull, or stainless screws if you can't. Seal with 3M 5200.

Ok, I can access the inside of the hull under the carpet, but would that also secure the rub rail? Would I just be better off using stainless screws then?

Oh man I have some of that 3m white 5200 glue stuff. I get it all over the place. Oh I usually put the stuff on the threads of the screw, should I also glob it on the outside as well?

What he said... I had the same thing happen to an old fish n ski of mine. Mine was just stainless screws. I actually fixed it while floating next to the boat in the water and just snapped the rubrail back in the channel...

My rub rail seems to have been attached with the rivets, cause as I pull it outward it takes rivets with it. There really isnt a channel for it. It just kind of hangs on with the rivets and looks to be sealed along the edges.

Do NOT Do this for Your boat !!

Screw or Rivet. Do NOT though bolt your rub-rail Period !

Well..unless you want more damage when you rub up against a dock ..or something ..

You want that RR rip out of the boat if a HARD hit happens .. don't destroy the glass around the fasteners is what I am suggesting ..

YD beat me to this one, but I'm going to say it again....don't use nuts behind the fasteners for your rub rails.

Thanks guys. I haven't taken care of this issue yet. I was hoping to attempt to rivet it back together. If that fails then I was going to use stainless screws.

Re: loose rub rail

Ok, so I purchased a few ss screws and was going to attempt this, but I noticed that the holes on the hull are not lining up at all. It has settled about a quarter of an inch below where it should be. I am pretty sure I could, with another person, pull the cap up and line the holes up the best I can and have someone else screw them in, but I am not sure that would work.

On the inside of the rub rail the broken half of the rivet remains and I cannot for the life of me pull it out.

Should I just drill new holes at this point and screw it together or do my best to line it up? It is about a 6ft area that most of the rivets have came out. Halfway up the boat to about 3 feet to the end of the bow. I can access about 3/4 of the holes. The others are inside the hull which I would not have any ability to get to.

Thanks!
