Loose alternator belt

While coming in from fising yesterday....I noticed the temperature rose a little bit. It went to about 185-190. Wasn't able to back off right away because I was in the inlet. When I slowed down in the no wake zone, the temp dropped, but not like it usually does. Usually drops to about 160. The engine is a Mercruiser 165 IL6 w/ FWC. I checked the coolant level and it was full. Today I checked the alternator belt and found it to be quite loose, so loose I was able to turn the alternator pulley. The voltage reading never dropped below 14V!. I am hoping this is the cause of my temp increase.... Any opinions on my assumption. It's raining today and haven';t been able to get down to the boat to tighten the bel yet.

Re: Loose alternator belt

I had a similar prob changed belt but continued to heat up when not at idle .Turns out my water pump ate the spring from the cooling hose siezing the pump and wearing down the belt.water pump turned freely but impeler was sheered off inside .so is your belt streched or abnormaly worn. good luck

Re: Loose alternator belt

I had that problem last year. turned out I had an oil line leaking right by the alternator pulley which was hoseing down both my belts allowing the water pump belt to slip without noticing any squeel or being noticably loose.

It appears to me, you assume Correctly..............
With your new closed cooling, the engine mounted water pump is your Only cooling water pump...........
Tighten up the belt,+ Go Fishing.....................
