Well, we may have to thank the French for our existance, but as of 1945 they need to thank us for theirs.

Who's talking about D Day!!?

The RAF had put paid to Hitlers plans for invaiding England well before then and with Stalin causing him all sorts of problems on the Eastern front it was very unlikley he would ever try again. This all happened well before the USA joined in.

As for the D Day landings it may come as a shock to some of you but you wern't the only country represented.

You can't belive everything you see at the movies.

Re: Looks like someone needs an enema.

Not that I want to get into this who's a bigger hero garbage, but... I admire the British more than any other country, other than my own USA. Hitler admired the British and was a bit on the tepid side when dealing with them. But the blitz was what it was.

Britian wasn't saved by the RAF, it was saved by the merchant marine. Toss in some absolutely brilliant code breakers in a castle over there, (Blechley Park??) otherwise the Nazi's could have made Britian a starving wasteland. Submarines were killing the Brits. I would imagine today we would need an investigation spread out in the MSM on exactly what when and who broke the enigma code at the time it happened. Publics right to know and all. Lend Lease and other programs providing the tools of war made right here by a bunch of hicks in factories in the USA was what made for victory. Guns, food, victory ships, ammunition, spare parts, trucks, etc. The Russians were blessed that we entered the war with a full scale effort against japan or they would all be eating rice as we speak. Our ability to fight on two fronts was really what made the day. The Russians would have been slaughtered by the pincer of Nazi's to the east and Japaneese to the west. Thus freeing up additional German troops to defend the homeland later in the war, making victory impossible, or prolonging the war such as to kill off all sides, while they developed their own nuclear weapons, jet planes, etc.

As for the French, I wish they would have shown the same resolve as those Americans, British and Canadians who showed what courage, conviction, and cause can bring to a fight. I am deeply moved the mayor has HAD to ask for the citizens to be simply polite to those who made their arrogance possible.

FWIW, my inlaws just came back from Leone France last Friday, and said that the people there were charming and polite.

It is true the British were brave and stood fast during the bombings. One of the reasons many Americans wanted to join them in their fight against the Nazis. Also the French resistance at that time was made up of brave people who risked their lives to helped defeat the Germans. The total victory was achieved by all the allies working together. The USA and UK have since then combined their resources to fight other tyrants in the world. But I'm afraid the French have forgotten about their own brave heroes of WWII who resisted the Nazis and never gave in.

I'd heard on the history channel that the only thing that saved the Brits was that Hitler stopped bombing airfields and started bombing their cities, which gave the Brits enough time to try to regroup and begin fighting back, otherwise they'd be spreken ze deutch or whatever that saying is.

WOW I'm shocked, the last time we had a thread about WWII it was a real ding dong with most of the post I replied to being along the lines of the USA beat Hitler and the Japs single handed, even had one bright spark say that if it wasn't for US pilots Britain would have lost the B of B.

I was expecting something very similar when I loged on this morning, but I agree with everything that has been said.

Just one thing I want to expand on from what waterinthefuel said:

"I'd heard on the history channel that the only thing that saved the Brits was that Hitler stopped bombing airfields and started bombing their cities, which gave the Brits enough time to try to regroup and begin fighting back, otherwise they'd be spreken ze deutch or whatever that saying is."

This is very true, the reason Hitler stoped bombing our airfields was because of decision made by a man who realy dosn't get the credit he deserves. Sir Arthur Harris (Bomber Harris) convinced Chirchill that a small bombing raid on Berlin would flick Hitlers ears enough for him to retaliate against London and give the RAF room to breath. "Know thy enemy"

We lost 350,000. Not far off the US figure, and from a country the equivalent size of one US state. Perspective, anyone?
