None of you have been to France, I'd wager........I'm still don't think kindly of the French. I still eat freedom Fries. If American tourists want to go somewhere to speak French they can visit Canada. The people are a whole bunch friendlier.

OMR,
We have repaid them twice (three times if you count Vietnam). I think we have paid that debt plus interest a couple of times over.
I've been to France. 1971. The Paris peace talks were going on. Just like now with us at war in Iraq the French hated us back then.None of you have been to France, I'd wager........
And go right ahead with that enema Pointer, ya might loosen up a little!...
It's still their elected representatives in their politburo that calls the shots. They do have a new president: Rickster. He is very openly pro American, and that does mean a majority of the French people elected him with their eyes wide open, (his opponent was very hard Left anti American).
The French are historically very irritating to anyone who is not French. That said: we would not even exist as a Country today without them, and I for one never forget the debt we owe them for that minor lil' gift of LIBERTY.
Helpin' them in WW2 helped to repay the debt, but as irritating as they are, I'd rather have them on our side. My $.02 Respectfully, JR

OMR,
The french had two choices in the last election. One (liberal) had a complete meltdown just weeks prior to the election. I wouldn't state so absolutely that they voted for their current leader out of a desire to mend fences with the USA. I will say I am encouraged by the change and look forward to them acting as allies instead of adversaries, which is how they have conducted themselves in the UN and in other matters of state the past 30 years.
With the change, comes hope. I am looking for some tangible modifications in their economic and political positions before I extend my hand to someone who has time and time and time and time and time again, tried to bite it. The french have been the dirty little bastages behind the scenes on almost every dirty deal in illegal arms and illegal trade underminding our foreign policy for the past couple decades.
This open arms approach wouldn't be prudent. I am cautiously optimistic. You seem to be ascribing the same type of mandate from the French elections that the democrats are pretending to ascribe to our past election. It wasn't a vote of confidence in democrats as much as a smite against the existing rabble.
I will pray for them to be our friends again just like the Marquis de Lafayette was. We need allies in this world.I totally agree with yer cautious assesment Pointer. I just wanted the non thinking or underinformed anti French types, (anonomus straw men cornvenient fer ol' Murky ta kick from time to time), to notice the POTENTIAL CHANGE FER THE BETTER! N' hope fer the best, (as you succinctly state here)
Respectfully, JR

Good thing , too!....The USofA. The only country in the history of the world which has ever had to rely on the French to win a war.
I seem to remember from my history lessons that we had delt with that problem before you lot arrived
You turned up just in time to help mop up the mess and take the glory
