Merc Optimax motors are direct injection, 2 cycle motors. In 135HP and up, they are V6 motors. These share blocks (but not heads, intakes, sensors etc) with carb and EFI V6 Mercs. The optimax's use high pressure air and fuel to force gasoline into the combustion chamber, after the ports are closed. Oil is injected into the crankcase, one injection point per cylinder.

To accomplish this kind of combustion, Optimax's need to have a multiport oil pump, air compressor, two high pressure fuel pumps and various other sensors and electronic devices, including a computer and memory.

I Think Chris 1956 explained it quite well, My son has twin 200 Optimax engines he said they are a real pain to work on just getting spark plugs out is hard he tells me. I think that they are good engines but when something goes wrong it is really hard for the weekend guy to fix!

I looked up the boat in Grady White archive and it said the max horse power is 185.
