Looking for sugestions for a truck bed liner style marine product for my floor.

I've got a late 80's Regal Medallion 195.

I've stripped the interior, and started rebuilding everything from scratch (side pieces, engine cover, console, glove box, etc)

I removed the factory carpet, and now I just have the plywood/fiberglass deck.

I want to re-do the floor now, but I can't decide which route I'd like to go. I would really like to use some kind of truck bed liner spray, rather than carpet. I was wondering if anyone had any experience or suggestions on what product I should use.

I have access to all kinds of automotive spray equipment, including a good supply of clean air.



A friend of mine suggested a product called zolatone, but it seems hard to get a hold of all the products we need (hardener, etc)

I've included a pic of what's done so far, and what the floor looks like. Keep in mind all the black pieces will be upholstered.

I played with several products over the past year and of all things, plain old rustoleum with small grit walnut shell blasting media for non-skid won the thumbs up of our crew... I was surprised and thought it was going to be the rubberized polyurethane tuff-coat (or something like that), but especially for the price, walnut shells and rustoleum (at ca. $20 a can) won out.... I am redoing the whole thing to be the same now...

Wow, that's surprising,

The other thing I was thinking of was "European gravel guard"

It comes in an aerosol spray can, and I used it on a dune buggy I built. Really tough against physical abuse (rock's gravel, etc) but I don't know how it would fair in terms of UV resistance and corrosion.


How many years would the Rustolium and wallnut shell setup last do you think?

I've used the aerosol bedliner on the underside of cars and it works fine. I have also used the roll on variety. For durability, the roll on seems better, but the aerosol is plenty durable in my opinion for a boat deck. I actually plan on using truck bedliner for my boat project. I plan on using a product called Grizlzy grip that you can get in a variety of colors other than black. I plan on using one of the gray colors.

Someone had it put in their boat professionally ( spray on bedliner ) and had very positive things to say about it. I'm considering doing similar to mine.

note that one of the liner mixes I used was two part urethane-based and another was one part urethane based made for swimming pool decks and water parks with rubber non-skid in it. I was shocked at how well the rustoleum held up. I do think that the part where I rolled mas epoxy on first then put the walnut hull bloasting media on (fine grained), let it harden, then vacuumed up the loose before rolling 2-3 coats of rustoleum pver it turned out the best. Could just as easily do with isocyanate-based polyurethane paint like imron, awlgrip or por15 if you wanbted it to be toucgh as nails... at under $30 gallon, for rustoleum... not sure I care how long it lasts... looks great after the first year - well until I just finished grinding it all up... to do it all the same and add splatter paint / webbing in colors to match upholstery, etc... note that I didn't see any nicks or chips in it... just my experience...

I also really liked the polyurethane elastomer based with rubber non-skid in it, but it was a lot more expensive and the rustoleum was easy to tape off the non skid area, put the blasting media down, then paint the whole thing the same color. I'm thinking eventually snap in carpet

Any colour,quick turnaround, non slip. We do more of them every year. Adhesion and durability cannot be matched by any do-it yourself kit.Trouble posting pics.

That looks awesome. I think it was Line-x that lundnisswa did to his boat as well that looked great. I could be wrong.

I did my splash-well the wal-mart roll on bedliner. That stuff is crap. The surface is too smooth and the material is fairly brittle and does not hold up. Surprisingly the spray can stuff they sell is better.

The commercially applied bedliners are certainly the most durable. I have a commercially applied liner on my truck and it is tough as nails. A few years ago I had to get access to the inside of my tailgate and had to grind away the liner (actually cupped wire wheel worked OK) and it took a while. I did what I had to and replaced what I removed with some roll on bedliner. Both the roll on and the commercially applied are holding up fine. The commercial variety is also costly though. For a boat that will not be seeing the kind of use a truck bed will I don't see that the extreme durability of the commercially applied bedliner is necessary. I can't remember the last time I loaded up a car engine block into my boat, but I had one in my truck 3 weeks ago.

One of the iBoaters did a restore on a Bayliner and used a product called Durabak. I checked it out and requested some samples and am DEFINATELY going to use it. Looks great and easy to apply.. Only downside - its $120/gallon

Not durable and a waste of money in a rattle can. Go with a roll on, or durabak, or even sand sprinkled into wet paint will last longer.

I thought it was 'Cuda, but didn't want to call him out by mistake! Durabak really seems to produce a beautiful finish.. I just wonder 1.) will a gallon typically do an entire deck? 2.) can you use it in the bilge too? and 3.) does it cover seams well?

Hey, I am restoring an 1988 Bayliner and I was thinking about using a product called Hydro-Turf. It is not a spry on product but I liked the product. It comes in a lot of colors and also different traction designs. It is used on PWC's and is a rubber like material.

I think Bear used 2 or 3 gallons. At least from the pics it covers really well and will hide most blemishes including seams. Hopefully Bear will come along and clear it all up for us.

You will need a special gun to shoot that with....... it will not work in a regular or hvlp spray gun.

The Durabak worked great. Hides imperfections, non-skid texture is great, not too harsh.. (rubberized bits so it gives) Ships drag 2 ton moorings across their deck with no damage... This stuff is strong! If I did it again I would have done one coat textured, then the other two coats non-textured. If I ever touch-up I'll use non-textured... I used 3 gal... Clean-up is easy! I just have a bucket with some mild detergent, a scrub brush, and a Sham-flippin-WOW... I mean Sham-Wow! I scrub ~ 2' area, then soak up with Sham-Wow, and WOW! back to perfect! You can also just spray out the boat with a hose, and let air dry...
