Thanks for the welcome!
I was considering a cuddy as well for longer trips down/up the Hudson, staying on the lake etc.
Total number of friends...hard to say....more will probably come out of the wood work when I actually have a boat ;-)

For right now it is my fianc? me and our 9mo medium sized pup. And possibly friends could include her sister, husband, and 2 kids.

Or a handful of younger friends possible as well, to it would vary trip to trip.

There are some used ones at the same dealer if you follow my link and look at the pre-owed inventory let me know if there is anything that jumps out as a good deal :)

mmmmmm Four Winns.... Great boat

The 2010 initial offer they made me was this:
2010 Four Winns H190
New Trailer (Registered, Inspected),
Bimini Top,
Full Canvas,
MP3 Stereo
Coast Guard package including : All PFD's, CG Radio, Depth Finder, Flare kit, paddles and any safety item I am forgetting

They also where going to add a season of Rack storage/quick launch too which for that length would normally cost $2900

The payment would be $280 a month for 10 yrs

Input????

I like that 1990 sea ray they have for sale. Inside looks mint, but outside LOOKS like it needs a good buff, which they should do. Good price if you can get it for 6k. I LOVE the walk through transoms too. If you swim off your boat you will very much enjoy it.

I am hoping one day we will utilize the cuddy other than storage, but I have yet to find a good excuse. It isn't so bad to open up the front hatch, sit on a cooler and cast the line off the bow. Some times I wish I had an open bow, but in any case I am still pleased with the condition and setup of my boat. You can always use the bow as a sunpad at anchor.

I was suprised with my friends after I got a boat. Some of them are glued to their computer/tv, others are married w/ young kids and have no time, and lastly the only people who are about my age at work are Indians and none of them know how to swim ><. I am going to teach a couple of the interested ones how to swim. Already tought 1 how to drive a car.

If you want to save on money and get a newer boat going with a 19-20ft w/ a 4.3L it might be a good option to consider. Who knows when gas prices are going to be coming down and boats LOVE gas!

I can fit comfortable fit 4 adults and 2 children in my cuddy, any more and they would have to be in the cuddy (which I don't think would be fun). The kids might also enjoy the open boy a little more, I loved it when I was a kid. Though they also might like to get out of the sun for a few inside of the cuddy. Last season 90% of the time it was me and my g/f and we would go out 1 to 2 times a week and just relax in our own little floating island.

I checked the site and everything seems to be old, large, and expensive. I got mine off craigslist, it looks like the dealers sell things with about 15-30% markup over craigslist.

Also, as your friends suggested, I wouldn't go new. After I bought my boat, I had to drive around 5mph for the first few times before my g/f felt comfotable lol...she actually felt so anxious she started crying ><. I then wondered if I would have to get rid of the g/f or the boat. She eventually warmed upped to it and really enjoys it. Though in any case go used, that way if something comes up you can get rid of it quicker and you feel bad about selling it for $10k less than you bought it for a 2-3 yeas ago, even though you only used it the first two years. If you still use it a lot and still use it after you start making babies, then it it is a good idea to start looking new and larger. Between my job and g/f I manage to get time to myself after a friend has a kid, I don't see them to often anymore.

Wow...I checked and your craigslist has half a year of posting on 1 page, mine has the 3 past days on the front page. In the summer/spring there a lot more. You need to do a road trip with a friend who owns a vehicle that can tow to Rochester. Stay in a cheap hotel that has internet in the South-East part of Rochester (Fairport/Pittsford). Then pay all the wonderful stoners of craigslist a visit to look at their boats. I can give you the number of my mechanic if you want him to take a look at a boat with you, he might look a little rough around the edges, but he is a nice guy who isn't expensive. You also can always arrange for a marine surveyor to take a look at it as well. In any case make sure you can try the boat before you buy it (which would require warmer weather).

This area is really a crossroads of boating. We have the Erie Canal, Lake Ontario, Irondiquot Bay, Sodus Bay to the East, Finger Lakes to the South. We are about ~200 miles away from you and you will get a better price on a boat as well as have a larger selection to pick from :)

Re: Looking for insight on my first boat, Tell me what you think of this one

Exactly why I was looking at dealers, the used selection off of want ad and Craig's list is limited and I would love to get something so I am ready for the season to start. I will have to take a look at the Rochester listings and see whats available!

Unfortunately the biggest problem I am facing is not being able to look at a darn thing since more dealers have their used inventory winterized and wrapped up in storage and so does any average job selling in his back yard which you cannot get to because of the several feet of snow (lucky if you can even see the boat back there with this winter).

I am still looking, and still trying to research and also weighing the risk of someones back yard vs. a dealer I can trust as well.

I would prefer to go a few years old but if they can make me an offer I cant refuse is there really anything wrong with a new boat as long as I plan on keeping it for a while? (let me stress it would have to be a very good offer!)

Has anyone looked at the Four Winns initial offer they gave me? I don't know where that offer stands in regards to being a good deal or a bad deal or even a workable one :)

I think a new boat can be a fine idea but as you said, only if you plan on keeping it. If you try a trade a new boat in on something else within a couple years you're going to take a bath. Boats (and RVs) are the worst when it comes to depreciation. However if you maintain it well, the depreciation will eventually level out. I would be concerned about anyone buying a brand new boat as their first because you probably don't know just what you want in a boat yet. Owning a using a boat for a while will help you decide that more.

Agreed - just like buying a new car. Not worth taking the depreciation hit unless you have your finances well planned and will be keeping it well beyond the lien term.
