Being on lake Ontario or close to it and if you like to explore as I do ,a big hull like an Islander is great for Big water.

Last Saturday on the lake the east wind chop was 4-5 ft with a wavelength of 12-15 ft and I was still turning at 3000rpm and only occasionally taking air under the hull.

An 18 footer can handle that (4-5 footers). You don't want to go too far offshore in case it gets bad. There is where the bigger boat pays off. If you go bigger it takes away your options for the smaller lakes though. Ahh heck get two boats, one for the Great Lakes and one for inland waters.

It's a balancing act, bigger boats are harder to trailer too. I fish Lake St. Clair it gets nasty but I'm only 2-4 miles (at most) from safe harbor. An 18 footer is good for me. Probably do Saginaw Bay too. Launch in Tawas and cruise across Huron to Georgian Bay, nope.

I say get two boats. lol. That way you got it all covered. Or buy 10 acres like Jasoutside and hide them in the woods. Your wife wouldn't even know. PLant a few pines your all set. DECISIONS, DECISIONS. Good luck.

I think the Subaru will tow the 18' by the way. Just my opinion.

I'll allow it.

I'm sure the weight is roughly equivalent to an 18' Starcraft. Perhaps around 2500 lbs or so?

Crestliner makes a very nice boat, high quality rigs:)

You could always re-badge it a SC if you really wanted:p

The important thing is to make sure it's made of aluminum:D

I have no idea what I'm talking about with weights. So ignore me. It could very well be under 2000. (but you should probably ignore this comment as well :p)

Sounds reasonable...don't forget the several hundred lbs of fish you will hopefully be hauling on the way back to the dock;)

BTW the NADA site has motor specs too if you need to check on the weight of that Merc.

oh you are a smart dude i will check that too. 400-500 sound reasonable on a shoreland'er trailer of the same year?

Compression testers cost about $30 and are really useful on all types of internal combustion engines, so probably worth it to buy one.

take all the plugs out. Put the compression tester in each hole, one at a time, and spin the starter for a bit.

Harbor freight has a comp checker for 20-30 bucks.

I hope you get the 18' open bow. I want to see if the Subaru tows it! Been looking at the Outback or Forester myself. I'll probably trade my 2 wheel Ranger for a 4x4 Escape 3.0 though.

Re: Looking for an older starcraft, need some advice

i got a compression tester from autozone today, they have that loan a tool thing fo free! i'm finding a few different procedures for checking it, the simplest was to take disco all the wires, mark them, and then remove one plug at a time testing each cylinder with the other plugs in. this seems easy. am i missing something? the guys in this video disco'd a coil pack, do i need to do something similar electrically?
