Okat so the problem is my transom is just to low. When I got the boat it came with a longshaft honda 15 hp and it runs great but obviously the prop sits to low in the water. I bought the bat thinking I could just put a jack pltae on it but quickly found out that whenever I slow down the water washes over the back of the boat, and I dont mean from wide open to idle, there is only about 2 inches from the top of the transom to the water. I put a 2X6 in the low part of the transom and that fixes everything, the cavitation plate is level with the bottom of the boat and no more water in the boat but I am looking for a more permanant solution from anyone who might have had this problem. Thanks.

Re: looking for a solution to my transom problem

I've seen people use extension "plates" that are sort of an adjustable fence that keeps most of the water out. I've also seen a shaped polycarbonate (plexiglass) visor sort of added to the top.

If you want to extend the transom upward it's been done, but you'd need to remove the existing transom at least partway to make sure the new transom was one piece with it. Outboard transoms need to be fairly strong. If it's an aluminum boat this is still possible but harder, you'd just extend the wooden part of the transom up and then provide an aluminum plate as backing, with attendant bolting and sealing.

You should also check the trim on your boat - if it's regularly sitting down far enough to allow water to wash in aft then you may be light in the bow, and fixing that would help. You might need to move yourself forward a seat if you're alone in the boat and use a tiller extension.

A lot of boats also have a splash well, a compartment ahead of the transom that the engine hangs over, and which is meant to get a lot of water in it. The front bulkhead of this compartment is full height and keeps water out of the rest of the boat.

I just raised the height on my transom... Its kind of a process but it can be done. The good news is that with a 15hp motor, you can lift it off/move it around by hand. It would be helpful to see some pictures.
