Re: Looking at a new truck......

For $1500 you can probably double that on a private sale.

Aerodynamics and weight are the real thing holding the truck back from better MPG, we need more competitive midsize trucks in the U.S.
Until recently, you could get the Impala SS with the DOD 5.3L/ 4 speed and it would do 29-30MPG (Highway) compared to the 15-19MPG Silverado.

The current GM trucks aren’t NEARLY as groundbreaking as the 1999-2000 re-design, that erra was a real game changer, (better MPG, smaller displacement/ higher HP engines, Autotrac 4x4, SUV like luxury, fantastic interior/ exterior style (compared to the competition choices).

I have a co-worker with an '11 F150 Ecoboost and he loves his truck, the MPG around daily is "average", he say 17MPG, but the 420ft torque is impressive and the only thing that could likely match would be a Hemi or 6.2L GM which likely get far fewer then 17MPG under similar circumstances.

All 3 brands build a great truck, the incentives have always been on the 1500 dodge (I believe) and more recent, the Silverado, the F150 is too new/ "hot" and likely the most expensive for some time to come.

As well as the Tundra 5.7L...its also claims over 400lbs of torque...as for the MPGs....If i want 20 out of my rig i better be on flat ground going 55mph. And well?, who does that! So, needless to say i never see 20mpg

I have been looking at new trucks recently because my hobbies have out grown my little ranger :D. I test drove a Eco boost and I have to say it was the nicest peppiest gas truck i have ever been in! It was really impressive BUTTTTT the prices are a little insane! In this area I think the cheapest I could find one was right around 40K! At that price I would definatly pass on to a Diesel.

Mine is an XLT extended cab with every option - stickered for $41k and I paid $34k. Ford has mountains of rebates on these trucks, it's not hard to get money out of a dealer, especially if you're patient.

Re: Looking at a new truck......

Well after circling the kitchen table with the wife on this one, last night we pulled the trigger on this purchase. It will be the first new vechicle we purchsed in 10 years. It will also become the wifes semi daily driver. She will use the car for going to work, but the new truck will be for hauling the boat and for here grocery getter when I'm away with the car.

So to all those that help influence this descision thank you for your help.

We are going with

2012 Chevy Silverado, Crew Cab, 4x4, Short Box, LT, Z85 package. We are putting on a Ranch Fiberglass Sierra truck cap. (luggage storage)

Pretty plain jane with the options, not even extented warranty or the protection plans. So you can guess what I'll be doing this weekend. OH yeah, forgot to add, it is being delivered on Friday night. Between scotch guarding, undercoating, rust proofing, and paint protecting, I'll be a busy boy...

A few question to the guys here on products to use.

3M Scotch Guard forn the cloth seats
3M Rubberized Undercoating "rust fighter-1" for wheel wells and general rock damage areas
Fluid Film RUst preventer for rust protection undercariage, doors, and everywhere else.

Paint protection will be that the factory uses, have a buddy that puts it on professionally.

ANy thoughts with these products?

Firstly, congrats on the new truck. I've had only good luck with GM's but all have been a few year used so I had the benefit of the original owner already having taken care of the little stuff that causes you to need to have warranty work done.
As for cloth seats, are they using the nanotechnology now like some companies started a few year back where the seats are stain proof not from a spray but the material technology? Since we have kids, our cars will only have leather for really easy clean up.
As for rubberized undercoating, I like it in theory but have heard on these forums multiple times how the stuff just wares off in a year's time and is a moneymaker for the companies that apply it. No first hand knowledge though but would cause me to do a little research.
Don't know what the Fluid Film Rust preventer is.
What I would do right off the get go is have the 3m type clear plastic material applied on the edge of the hood and other rock damage prone areas. The hood ledge would be my absolute minimum and I'd also add it to the door edges. I've got it on one of my newer tow vehicles that is known to like to rust at the hood seam and the door guards are great since it is also my wife's daily driver and she has a habit of being rough on door edges.
Go ahead and post some pictures for us.
