Looking at a boat with a 1995 Evinrude 120 V4, anything I should know?

As do all manufacturers, Evinrude had some outboards that shouldn't have been built. Any thoughts on these, anything I should look out for?
Thanks in advance!

at least do a run test...
check compression and report back with #s for opinions
check gear oil ( any water) if none could have been replaced to hide things
private or dealer sale... any warranty from a Dealer ?
price ??? appearance crudded. salty or pampered with TLC for 28 years
any shop reports on past /recent maintenance do on it ex: impeller age ???

etc...

it's on a really clean looking Alumacraft for a seemingly good price. If we look at it will definitely check compression. It's a bit of a drive and mostly want to check on the reputation of these. I haven't come across anything bad but IBoats knows best!

The first couple of yrs for the V4 Loopers were riddled with Issues, but by 95 the bugs had been ironed out. As mentioned a Compression Check, and Gear Oil, but that could have been changed when the Boat was being prepped for sale. Check the Integrity of the Transom by locking the Engine at full tilt, and then applying all you weight to the Skeg, there should be No Flexing of the Transom, whatso ever.

by 1988 with the big bore looper 120 and 140hp the issues disappeared for the most part. the best and strongest by far was the 130hp and 135hp (made under BRP only for a year or 2). they didn't make a 120 in 1995 only a 125 commercial and 130hp. i'd check the ID tag for a model code and report back. most have been rebuilt so you never know what powerhead you will get.
