Re: Looking at a 15 hp Sea King

I got the new ignition all installed and the flywheel put back on. One interesting thing is that i had to run a tap through the flywheel nut as the threads were a bit mucked up, it seemed to torque down properly though, I also had to do the same thing with the shifter linkage disconnect as well. The throttle gear also showed up, I am very impressed with the USPS, that was two days from Georgia to Oregon, not bad. I well take the that apart and get installed over the weekend sometime.

Any hints on how to reset the throttle after it is taken apart?

I checked on how much a can of matching paint would be, runs about $15 for a half pint and then you need hardener, reducer and etching primer as well. I'm thinking this one would be worth it though.

Unless the tiller handle/twist grip is in real good shape, you might want to pull the tiller handle, disassemble it and clean and lube it. Pretty easy after you get the grip off...it comes apart in two parts, lengthwise. Be careful with the little gear that meshes with the part you purchases. If I remember right, you should have a couple of cogs/notches on the gears left after you advance the throttle to FAST...you'll know what I mean when you start aligning it.

Did you replace that impeller? You should have. It will disintegrate after awhile. It would be a shame to burn up that motor after putting so much money work into it.

Match the throttle gears so the first teeth match up.

It is supposed to have a 3/16" Stainless Steel DRIVE pin. It is not a shear pin and is not intended to shear. A rubber hub in the propeller takes care of the bangs and bruises of grinding up rocks. Yeah, yeah, I know, you can't see any rubber in it, but it is in there.

But go ahead and use a brass pin if you enjoy hanging out over the transom to change it every time it wears out just from the clunk of shifting gears.

Did not know that, I was just going by the Gale Factory manual which says it has a brass shear pin. The impeller looked like it has recently been changed, still soft and flexible and no cracks or checking, I did pick up a new one to have on hand just in case.

Re: Looking at a 15 hp Sea King

Good news and bad news. I got the throttle buttoned up and nicely regreased but the gears at the tiller tilt don't mesh up properly except when the tiller is all the way up. I don't know if the gears are worn out or I don't have something in properly.

The other good news is that the motor runs but the recoil spring broke  so I well need to find a new one of those.

I found a new recoil spring and got it installed but for some reason I pulled the rope once when it was installed on the motor and it feels like the dogs are not engaging now, just pulls in and out with out catching, I well have to pull it apart again and see if something else broke.

Re: Looking at a 15 hp Sea King

I got it all buttoned up again, side covers on and the knobs reset and dropped it in the garbage can again :D Fired up on the third pull and promptly quit. Fiddled with the knobs and tried again, ran it on the choke for a while and then started playing with the mixture. I ran it for about 20 minutes to clear out the varnish, the first time it ran the other day it left black deposits in the water. I was able to get it to idle down and shift into gear and it was running fairly well at the end. I think I well just need to get the boat seaworthy and take it out to a lake and run a tank of gas through it and it should be good, just not stored properly for a couple of years and its gummed up.

I'm very happy with it though and I think I well definitely look into getting it painted up and new decals, I'm proud of it :D

Way to go Ohm. It'll run even better on the boat, when it's not eating its own exhaust fumes.

Or the nozzle on the end of the hose  Now I just need to finish up the boat and get the trailer set up to carry it and install the hitch receiver on my truck that I have had sitting around for 4 years  At least I have incentive to get the other two projects done.

Re: Looking at a 15 hp Sea King

My bro-in-law has a 1951 Sea King 5HP with coils that look the same as pictures posted back in this thread. They are cracked also. We took them off and found it was arcing to the chassis (which is why we would not always get spark at the plug). I am surprised your motor runs well with the coils in that shape. Or did you replace the coils?

I thought it would be worth a shot to remove the cracked insulation from the coils and redo it with epoxy or silicone or fiberglass resin or whatever to keep it from arcing. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Re: Looking at a 15 hp Sea King

Folks have done that but to me the piece of mind of new coils outwerighs the
pain of all the cobbing and I'm a cobber from way back.
You can get coils right here at iboats or check out ebay you might find some deals.Just check their feed back.

Re: Looking at a 15 hp Sea King

I just read that a guy used Plasti-dip to repair a coil pack on his car. That's the stuff you dip a tools' handle into to coat it as a grip. He masked the coil pack and dipped it which resulted in a nice looking hard coating. (And I bet you get to choose from a few colors! Woohoo!) Apparently worked fine after driving around for a week or so.

Cobbers are Cobbers! :D Sometimes I think it's funner to be a cobber than to do things the right way. lol It all depends on if your fixing a pace maker or a pitch fork. Or if your old motor is a kicker or is used to get you back home. I've got a 1938 Champion 2.9hp S1D that I'm working on and it left me stranded because of junk in the gas clogging the carb resulting in having to use the oars... Lesson learned. If we try plasti-dip I'll let the forum know what the result is.
