looked at a Johnson Javelin the other day..seller wants $600 ...
he never had the outboard running while he owned it
it came with a 17ft fiberglass boat, I think it might have been a Tuffy, he is turning into a fishing boat..
claimed boat is rated for only 70Hp so he is selling the 85hp...
motor turns over...he thinks/claims outboard was last run about 2 years ago...
I brought over a freshly charged battery and did a compression check with the motor cold...
readings 105, 95, 95 & 95....It seems to be low readings to me even with the outboard not being warmed up....
walk away...????...comes with controls...

Cold engine and those readings and i didnt require that 85hp to still be right there at 85hp then id look into it further.
Id at least run it and do another test when its warm and oils gotten through it, even better after some seafoam has being run through it too

Re: looked at a 85hp Johnson Javelin the other day

I had an 85 and a 88spl...older motors. Both topped off at about 95 and i never had any issues at all. strong dependable motors. I thought about rebuilds, but why? Ran excellent.

I'd say if those numbers hold, and you can talk him down a bit-might not be too bad if its not super old (you didnt mention the year or model). If he thinks your serious maybe you can talk him into firing it up for a listen and another warm comp test?

A stock 1979 85 hp engine with factory compression will make 125 lbs on each cylinder. It really depends on what year. OMC varied the compression significantly over the years. What year is it?

It was on a 1983 boat but it does not appear to be the original outboard for that boat ..
here is a pic of the motor..it does have trim/tilt

1977 was the last year that the factory used that externally-mounted trim system on the 85 hp models.
