Hey all, i have a 1996 6hp mercury two stroke. It came with a 20" shaft. What is the cheapest way to get it to 15" shaft and what do i need for the conversion?

Find a donor motor for say $100 or so.----------Buying new parts can get expensive.

I had this problem on an old 14" starcraft and a 05 mercury 15 4 stroke. I replaced the tired transom and brought it up 5". It cost me about $100 and alot of work, but it made my little boat a better boat. i never have to think about backwash what a difference. I ran it for a few years hanging low, it was ok even setup wrong. about a 2 to 3 mile an loss. I did eat a few rocks along the way because it hung down so far. If you want pics let me know. the cost is prohibitive unless you find a blown motor!!! It is not a perfect world but you can bend the rules sometimes.

This motor is on fabulous condition kind of a shame to give it up. I was going to create a 5" mount for transom but i also have a 15 4stroke with 15 shaft so i will just probably sell it

If you have a 15 be sure to drain and flush with seafom every spring. The idle circuit plugs up in a heartbeat and it will not run under 1800rpm. If it is not a bigfoot keep an eye on LU oil condition. I blew mine and it cost $1000 to replace it!!!! VERY WEAK NEEDLE BEARINGS

quick question for you, how was you compression on a cold engine? mine went up to like 100. Also have you noticed when pull starting yours and once your reached the turn over point the rope gets really hard to pull and once you pull it out it turns over?

Re: Long shaft to short shaft conversion

My compression is 175 on 1 and 170 on 2. It was a low hours trolling motor when I bought it, and I switched over to Mobil 1 15- 50 early on. I do mine warm. I got it cheap because it wouldn't idle well. After about two weeks I figured that there was crossover between the two cyinders causing the charge to contaminate and not fire at low rpm. Head was warped, flattened it out and put in new head gasket and touched up the valves it has been fine. Good Luck! If yours is a nonelectric start there is an unloader that changes your readings. Check with Mercury on this.
