Long Island sound fishing/ tides

I'm trying to understand good times to go out fishing. High tide is going to be at 12:33am. So is it true that there will be a slack tide for about a hour or two after 12:33(which aren't good times to fish)? Then from about 2:33am would be the time to start fishing? Also Would it be best to fish when the water is going from high to low? I mostly fish for fluke, stripers and blues on the Long Island sound. Any tips would be greatly appricated. Thanks

My friend and I fish Off of Jamaica bay in Brooklyn NY. We were out yesterday and we got a striper, 2 blues. out here its dead because water is to warm for fluke. It all matters, water temperature, bait, and style of fishing. we just slowly trolled around with jigs in the water

Bluefish will bite whatever, whenever, you just need to find them (which shouldn't prove difficult right now).

Fluke like deeper holes this time of year (60' to 100'). You must drift for fluke when the tide and wind are going the same direction, the height of the tide is not so important. Remember, fluke will lay on the bottom facing into the current waiting for bait to come by, so you need to present the bait accordingly or you will drag it right over their backs and they wont see or hit it.

Stripah fishing is an art in itself. I tend to have best luck from high tide and two or three hours of it running out. The big girls like structure, darkness, and spook easily. Be as stealthy as possible (no noise or lights) drift eels or chunks over rocky areas using only enough weight to get to the bottom and florocarbon tied direct to a snelled hook (they see everything).

In case I wasn't clear; "big stripers" = night time!! They are nocturnal feeders, you will get them in the daylight, but usually the smaller more active males. An overcast day or rough topwater will also produce.

Tide really doesn't matter..you want current and the current doesn't necessarily correspond with the tides. Winds and moon phase have a big effect on the currents.

Everyday is different. Some days they'll hit on an outgoing, some days on the incoming, some days on slack. I generally plan to fish a tide cycle when I have not been out in a couple of days. Networking is a huge asset if you don't go out much.

REALLY???? We will go as far as wiping the floro with alcohol swipes to remove the dirt.

Correct about the tide, you need current and structure. The bait will collect against structure that the current is pushing into. Find the bait, find the fish!

Probably why a boat from north of the Mason Dixon line to never placed in a Championship on the Chesapeake series event. They're too busy cleaning off their fluoro.:laugh: Seriously, there are few applications where flouro is advantageous under the right conditions. Catching Stripers, aka Rockfish, certainly isn't one of them.
They are extremely lazy fish. They don't like to chance meals. You put a bait within easy reach and they have no problem hitting it, even if presented on the end of #100-150 monofilament.

We fish the "On The Water Striper Cup" up here. Big season long event, big money prizes. We strive to find the 50 & 60 lbers otherwise they wont count. I agree that the younger more active ones are easier targets.
Maybe next year, I'll try the coat hanger trick!!:laugh:

All kidding aside, if you talk to 20 different fishermen, you get 20 different opinions! One thing for sure, you need to get out and find them to catch em! It cant be done from the couch!

Same fish. They come back "home" to spend the winter and spring every year.

Threw the traditional NE methods away and looked for something that was a better fit the conditions we face. I've fished a couple times with a couple of guys that fish out of Jersey. They laughed and made jokes about my planer boards the first time out. That morning, we caught and released 24 fish over 40" in two hours. At one point we had 8 fish on at a time. Needless to say, they went home believers with the plans to make their own.

hi guys and gals just wondering how the fishing is going in long island? I been up and down Jamaica bay and caught nothing Wednesday, two of my friends went out today and had nothing either

Been getting some nice blues lately. My friend just got a 33" today. And another on wed or thurs another. Im in the western part of the sound.

we had a good day at Jamaica bay in Brooklyn. Caught a bunch of spot fish, 1 seabass almost keeper and a weakfish. We used clams. 20130909_162203.mp4 - YouTube
