The manual says that I can free fall my anchor using the tool that came with the windlass and loosening the gypsy cap. I have the tool and the cap says "Loosen ->" on it but I cannot get the cap to budge. I want to give it a little tap with a rubber mallet to see if it breaks free but other than that is there anything I should / can do? Anything I'm missing other than insert the tool and turn in the direction the arrow points?

The windlass is not fast enough to power out to the bottom when trying to anchor at the sandbar and it seems safer to loosen the clutch than to pull the chain / rope out of the gypsy.

It turns out that a tap with a mallet got the cap loose and the anchor does free fall with a little movement of the tool handle. That should solve my problem of getting the anchor to the bottom quickly. The only question now is how tight does the cap need to be to retrieve the rode... I'll figure that out soon enough.

Your doing it correct, its just froze up do to not being used to free drop.

Just snug, if it needs more it will start to slip on retrieve. My Maxwell doesn't use a wrench and is loosened and tightened by hand.

As long as it works as expected I'll be using it to free fall every weekend so hopefully it won't freeze again. Haha

Seems logical. I'll give it a decent push (handle goes away to tighten) when done the initial drop and then power out to get the boat into position.

Thanks
