Apparently the family and friends were doing a deer drive and chased out 3 cubs. The cubs got on the "other" side of the girl. The momma bear took exception to the 18 year old female hunter being between her and her cubs and proceeded to attack. The father shot twice at the bear while it was on the girl and the brother took a shot. The bear decided it was time to go to her cubs! The girl was bitten on the face and arms, but will recover.

The moral of the story ... NEVER, NEVER, NEVER allow yourself to be between a momma and her cubs. Kinda works with human mothers, also ... just saying ...

I hope the girl recovers quickly. I don't know if it's rule no. 1 or not, but ya never get between momma and the cubs.

Surprised mamma and cubs aren't sleeping by now..... They should be sound asleep around here. Although, we did see a bear that was hit by a car a couple of years ago in December. Even smelt a skunk yesterday, they should be sleeping too.... Was this close to you 'Speck?

Found the same thing with moose when I lived in Alaska. We had a momma and her calf hanging out in the front yard one winter. You had to be careful just walking out to the mailbox lest you inadvertently get between mom and baby. I saw a snowmobile reduced to the chassis by an angry momma moose once.

That is so sad, I couldn't imagine the moment I realized I don't have enough gun for a situation, thoughts and prayers..

Hate to carry a heavy weapon through the woods so I usually deer hunt with a 30-30 lever. Seen many bear (don't prefer bear meat so I do not target bear) and often wonder if my little Marlin is enough to stop an angry charging black bear in a panic shooting from the hip.

Glad she is ok!!

I generally hunt deer with a .220 Swift, a 6mm, or a .243. Occasionally I will go to a 7mm or a .270, but usually the smaller calibers. Not what you would call outstanding bear guns. However, the .44 mag that is often strapped to the side is there for just such emergencies ...

Did you catch the RABID bobcat attack NY woman attacked by rabid bobcat - WCAX.COM Local Vermont News, Weather and Sports-

Glad the girl os okay.

Your 30-30 is plenty however........an angry momma bear may be harder to drop. Many have been taken with a 30-30

Incidentally .....I hunt with a 45-70 and it is loaded with my handloads..... Plenty of power :)

I read a survival article in Outdoor Life that says the chances of surviving a bear attack are significantly higher if you have pepper spray vs a gun.

Did not hear about the bobcat attack. Lotta rabies incidents this year down here with small game. My pup likes to tangle withem and I am always concerned. Had a fox walking down Main Street during the day last summer all foamy and wobbly, so I walked the dog into a cell phone shop and called 911. He wandered back into the wetlands before wardens arrived. Cell phone guy waves me in his store now to play with my dog.

I spend many years teaching government personal about bear spray, I have used it twice on grizzly bears and I am still hear to talk about it, the stuff is really effective in a panic situation, I carry it when I am hunting, I hunt with a bow and I quit carrying a sidearm many years ago. So I can say with 100% confidence, the bear spray is good stuff.

Fishing in Alaska I always carried my .44 Colt Anaconda and a pistol grip 12 gauge Mossberg. It really was not to kill a bear but rather to break contact if the bear decided my fish should be his/hers.

While I was in Fairbanks we had a 12 year-old take out a bear that was trying to enter the families trailer through a kitchen window. He was home alone and grabbed dad's .357 from the nightstand.

Re: Local girl mauled by bear ...

The latest from WTAJ News ...

PORTER TOWNSHIP, CLINTON COUNTY - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA, has asked a local young woman who was mauled by a bear to stop hunting.

PETA sent a letter to Camille Bomboy, the 18-year-old hunter who narrowly survived an attack by a mother bear Friday morning.

Bomboy was attacked by a bear Monday morning at her family's farm, and suffered bite injuries to her arms and shoulders and almost lost an ear. Her step-father was able to scare the bear off by shooting a rifle into the air.

Bomboy is at home healing and had said that the mauling won't stop her from hunting. PETA suggested that Bomboy take up hiking or photography.

The full text of the letter is below.

December 13, 2013

Dear Ms. Bomboy,

I am writing on behalf of PETA and our more than 3 million members and supporters, including thousands across Pennsylvania, to send our best wishes for your speedy recovery and ask you to take a few moments to reflect on this incident. This seems to be a good opportunity to put yourself in the place of the individuals you and the rest of your hunting party were trying to kill. As terrifying as it must have been to be attacked by a bear, please consider the frightening and painful experiences that hunters set out to impose upon animals. There used to be a bumper sticker that read, "I support the right to arm bears!" That was a joke, but in all seriousness, it would be a blessing if you were to abandon hunting and decide to live and let live.

As this mother bear demonstrated, animals form intense bonds with their young, just as we do, and will go to great lengths to protect them, just as your stepfather did for you. Like us, animals value their lives and don't want to be killed. And many animals endure prolonged, painful deaths when they're injured by hunters but not killed outright, which I'm sure you know firsthand from being in the woods. A study of 80 radio-collared deer found that of the 22 deer who had been shot with "traditional archery equipment," 11 were wounded but not recovered.

Now that you've experienced the horror of an attack—although this one was in self-defense—we hope you will choose to enjoy nature in only nonviolent ways. Thank you for your consideration.

Kind regards,

Just over the ridge from my place, about 2 miles as the crow flies. She is now home recovering and is in good spirits. Her picture was on the front page of the local paper and is lucky that she will not have any scars on her face.

She got a letter today from PETA saying she should give up hunting and just take up hiking or bird watching. She answered she is still going to hunt. We got some pretty tough women up in our neck of the woods.
