I have read on many sites to put your motor in reverse to free up airlock but that is such a pain to keep doing. Does anyone know of any other options or a way to set it up differnetly to prevent this.

If you need to go through that process to get it to pump water it is mounted too high. the intake on a livewell pump needs to be below the water line. That means the input on the pump, the hose leading to it, and the inlet on the back of the boat all need to be below the water line.

What SilverTip said plus a check valve in the line running to the LW will help as well.

My livewell pump is attached to the intake pipe which is well below the waterline and it locks up sometimes, too. See if your thru-hull fitting has any excess pipe sticking out the back & trim it off.

I believe the inlet on mine is still underwater on plane, but can't say for sure. If not then a check valve might help, until you take off with the pump running. I guess it would prime the first time when you backed off the trailer?

I have a scoop intake on the bottom of the hull for the LW pump. The hose comes out of the pump and runs straight up to a in-line check valve that's roughly 18" above the level of the pump. Running the pump out of water has no affect since you have roughly 18" of water on top the pump at all times.

My inlets and pump are well below the water line. Once I get it to prime it works fine until I crank up and ride on plane for a while. The scoop intake sounds a little interesting are you talking about a high speed pick up. Can you better explain that set up? Also how will a check valve help I thought the only purpose for that was to prevent water from flowing out?
