ok.....any thing with an electrical heat element.....like a toaster....a space heater....coffee maker.....will draw at least 10 amps....if not 15. so you can only use one at a time with your current set up.

as far as hooking to shore power. read the oners manual for your boat. it will have great details on where all the things like this are. including the proper operations of the different systems.

Another thought... do you have your slip yet? If so, talk to your neighbors.... Find someone that lives aboard now... a hands on "show and tell" can teach you things in 5 minutes (and be clearer) that might take weeks on a forum.

Make sure the electrician is use to and has worked on boats before. Many home electricians can do the job but have no clue as to how to run things on a boat. Like mentioned above, talk with the local live aboards and get recomendations on who to use. Just like a home, washer and dryer, stove, refrigerator, depending on amp draw, should usually be on there own circuit with seperate breakers sized for that item. You can do a search and find many liveaboard forums and also magazines that are just for the live aboard community.

Having lived aboard for 15 years, the first thing you are going to need is a heating system. Electric is not the way to go in a boat.
Heating systems from places like Webasto or Espar (Just to name a couple) can keep your boat toasty warm without shore power. DO NOT Skimp on size, you are not heating a well insulated house. Boats have no insulation, and lots of single pane leaky windows.
Stoves/Ovens with a properly installed propane system is the only way to go.
With those two systems, you can use a couple burners and the oven, in a warm boat, while heating water, running the fridge, and TV all at the same time.

I have been to TO in the winter and it is bloody cold!!!!

"Are you sure you want to live on the boat year round???"

I think it would be warmer in a dumpster than a boat, good luck.

(thermal underware/long johns are your best friends)

Also, keep in mind that it is probably YOUR shore power that is running your bubblers around the boat. Ice will be a foot thick if your power fails.
