Re: List the classic "OOPS" while boating

Just had another one yesterday.

Helped a guy launch a big ugly old wooden boat. It was sitting on a rusty trailer, resting on old tires. After he'd launched, I backed my trailer into the water ( I always use a long rope so the car doesn't get its feet wet) and powered my boat on. When you power a boat onto a trailer that's only held by a rope and not fixed to the vehicle, you only have one chance. Screw up, and the trailer gets shoved into shallow water.

Each time I got close to my trailer it bounced away. Couldn't work it out - thought I'd snagged an underwater line somehow. Turned out that I was bouncing off one of the tires that had come adrift from the previous guys launch and got snagged underwater on my trailer.

When I fished it out, I heard a shout 'Oh yeah - that's mine. Wondered where it'd gone!

Pulled out using my outdrive as an asphalt cutter the other day. Had to pull up on blocks so I could raise it up when I was out strapping my boat to the trailer.. couldnt figure out why I had such an audiance for cleaning out the boat. surprising noone said a word till after I got it raised... then everyone wants to talk.

I did this yesterday....pulled plug while underway to drain rainwater. Tossed it in the bottom of the boat. Scooped out some water with a boat bailer made from Clorox bottle to speed up the process. Accidently scooped up the plug and threw it overboard....doh!
Had to find an old stick to plug the drain hole.

one that hasn't been mentioned: drive away from the trailer without unhooking the safety chains.

How about being courteous to a fellow boater, letting him through the locked gate out onto the pier, only to be told later he was not a fellow boat owner but a boat thief on the prowl...

remembered that I left fishing gear at home when I put the boat in the water, put the boat plug in the live well drain and took on lots of water, went night fishing on Toleda Bend without a spotlight.

My wife experienced #15 this weekend. First thing in the morning, hair done, ready to go to the airport, steps from our boat to my buddys boat, foot slips..."splash"...followed by a list of words I dont know how to spell.

Never leave a boat untied in a slip, even for a minute. Had it floating around the middle of the marina.

Never give the boat any throttle while trying to dock or manuever through a bouyfield, I see this daily, you'll just run into things.

Never let your kids play in the boat before you take it out. Your infant grabs the kill switch lanyard and you don't notice and spend 10 minutes trying to start it, then realize you now have a dead battery.

Re: List the classic "OOPS" while boating

I've done #1 and #4 but my two best tricks where on a single day of trolling for stripers off the coast with three friends

We meet up and head down to the water at 3:30 am in hopes of getting into the hot action taking places about an hours run from the dock. We get to the boat; make a quick check of the boat and tackle and off we went. By now it’s almost 6:30 and we have an hour run ahead of us so everyone settles in for the long run south. About 45 minutes into the trip the first cry for a breakfast beer goes out and the subject soon changes to who got the beer out of the back of the truck and what did they do with it. Well as luck would have it the beer was still in the back of the truck. Somehow we managed to unload 3 duffle bags full of clothes, 2 tackle boxes, and 2 bags of munchies but somehow forgot the beer.

Ok we’ll survive. We’ll just run down here and stick it to them and we’ll have our limit in no time and be back at the dock before noon for some frosty cold ones when we get back to the dock. .Well we finally get down south and there’s not much going today so we decided totroll our ay back north and see if we could run into anything. I bumped the boat down to trolling speed and got a brand new 21 Tony out of the tackle locker and put it on the roof rod and put it WWB in the spread. It had been the hot lue as of late so I stopped specially the day before to buy a couple more just for this trip. Anyhow, about an hour later that same roof rod goes down hard, fish on. I get the rod out of the holder and the line goes limp. Ok, it happens, wind the lure up to to where I can see that it’s still running right and back it goes. It wasn’t 10 minutes later the same thing happens, another screamer on the roof rod and then nothing.

By this time I’m get pi$$ed., We’ve just lost 2 good fish in a matter of 20 minutes, we don’t have any beer, and my self professed “expert’ fishing status was being seriously questioned by my partners. We had a go at it for maybe another ½ hour or so and it’s time to go home.

To get us under way a little quicker I had everyone grab a rod and start cranking. I, being the good guy that I am grabbed the rod with the Tony and proceeded to crank away. As the lure got close to the back of the boat I notice something red on the back of the spoon. When I finally got the spoon into the boat it was quite evident that I forgot to remove the little red rubber hook protector before I threw the spoon overboard. Talk about feeling stupid. Fortunately nobody saw what happen and I surely was not going to divulge that little bit of information to them as I would have never, ever lived that one down. To this day I still have yet to confessed to the stupidly I exhibited that trip.

Re: List the classic "OOPS" while boating

Here's one of my great moments: I had my little 8 foot jon boat out on a small state park lake -pretty calm and hardly any other boaters out. It was in October so it was fairly cool out and a lot of the tourists were gone. I was fishing along and needed to relieve myself. I beached the boat on a pretty steep bank and proceeded to go over to a tree. I was in full mid stream when over my shoulder I saw my boat slip down the bank and back into the water... Before I could get over by it, it was at least 25 feet away from the shore and I had nothing to reach it with. Now came the big decision - do I swim for it or what? It was cold out and I didn't have any swim-wear. With nothing else to do, I decided to wait. After 20 - 25 minutes I got blessed with a great sight. About 4 canoes came into view paddling my way. My boat had drifted at least 75 yards out by now. When they were in earshot, I yelled out. "hey - you canoers! Can you bring my boat back to shore?" Up for any adventure they yelled back that they would. They brought it back and didn't even ask for an explanation as to why my boat was not with my person. Created a memory..

For those who want more great reading on this subject, there's a whole section on this in the "other" forums here on iboats. It's the "Stupid Human Tricks while Boating / Fishing" section. I like the one about Battery drills not floating.

Took someone out on a boat who didn't say he had a phobia of large expanses of water...

How about borrowing a buddies boat and not bothering to check the 2 stroke oil tank?

And that motor having a malfunctioning low oil warning?

Buying your buddy a 4K motor rebuild - priceless.

Get ready to go jigging, get out to spot, tie up, open tackle box, rig, and realize I forgot the bait

Re: List the classic "OOPS" while boating

Launch at low tide on ramp in dark and forget to unhook transom tie-downs. Boat and trailer go 'thunk!' as the trailer wheels go past the end of the ramp, of course now with the boat tied to trailer, can't pull trailer wheels back up onto ramp. Swim out to unhook transom tie-downs, almost lose one (dove down 5' to grab it before it got away). Finally get boat off trailer, pull trailer back up on ramp. Then explain to admiral who is holding 1 yr old son (crying the whole time) that she can stop giving me 'advice' as it's back under control!

New #1 ooooops --

Making a decision 4 weeks ago to buy a bigger, more comfortable boat whan gas was $2.35 (we can probably handle that) and ignoring the government / oil companies / press saying they wanted gas to be at $3.00 by end of summer (Labor Day). It was.

Now they say they want it a $4 by the beginning of summer next year (Memorial Day). But it is a fantastic riding boat. I know -- we went out once.

Good grief!! (Literally)
