1970 M-1 drive 165hp 250 cid The limit switch on the gimble ring is inoperative the wires are short and very corroded. the bolts that hold the switch in are very rough looking i'm affraid to try to remove them, i'm sure they will snap off. I guess you can run without it, is it's purpose to shut the trim pump off when all the way up or? Does anyone have a wiring schematic to bypass this so the tilt/trim will still operate ok? thanks :)

Re: limit switch bypass?

The trim limit switch should not limit your ability to use tilt. If you can't tilt, you have more problems than simply trim limit. Basically, the only difference between trim and tilt is that one is supposedly limited to the maximum range for safe full power operation to save your u-joints. If you already know by ear, boat attitude or by gauge, where the top of trim is, then simply use your tilt switch. Almost a semantics only discussion . . . I guess the point is, "tilt" should bypass trim limit . . .

Re: limit switch bypass?

Ok so i guess it is the trim limit i'm talking about, i have the little "outdrive" gauge on mine that shows the position of the drive. It's not all hooked up yet so i was wondering if there was any wiring to do to safely bypass the trim switch for the control switches to work properly? thanks

They is likely a way to bypass the trim limit switch on your outdrive. On the Alpha I, there are two purple bullet connectors where the switch is spliced into the main harness circuit. The bypass is to unplug the two bullet connectors that run to the switch and plug the main harness bullet connectors together.

That is exactly the purpose, & you can run with out it hooked up....
There are only two wires that go out through the transom....;)

Ayuh,...
As Chris says,...
Just inside the transom plate there's 2 wires for the Trim Limit Switch,+ 2 wires for the Trim Gauge,... Both sets will have bullet connectors where they join the boat's wiring harness,....
By pass it there,+ the buttons will work right, except it'll go all the way to Tilt, instead of stopping at Trim....

Re: limit switch bypass?

So just connect the two harness wires together instead of connecting them to the wires going in through the transom plate? And the control buttons will work ok? Thanks guys thats easy enough. :)
