I'm not very good with trailer lights. When testing the connection at the vehicle, I have power (tail lights on) at all times even when vehicle lights are off. Is this a grounding issue? However, when I connect boat trailer, no lights. Bad connection at trailer? This is a 4 prong flat connector.

Re: light problem

Sounds like someone wired the tail light wire to + instead of the tail light feed. Not a grounding issue.
On a 4-flat brown is tail lights, white is ground, yellow is left turn/brake, green is right turn/brake.

Re: light problem

I have a 20 ft pontoon and had constant problems with the lights..Until a friend suggested an additional ground strap at each light...Just a short jumper with a round stud connector at each end. Put one end on the light stud and attach the other in with a self-taping screw to the trailer frame. It seems that the ground is just as important as the power.

Haven't had a light problem in over 2 years.

Trailer lights it seems are constantly causing trouble. How many times have you seen watertight trailer tail lights half full of water,,, I drill a small hole in bottom,,, let's water in sure,,, but also let's water out, just unplug lights before backing into water. Also,,, take out all your lamps,, and smear marine grease on contact end of bulb,,,, do that to tail light mounting bolts too, even put a little on the flat plug,,,,,,,,,, helps reduce failures due to corrosion/oxidation
