What type do you use?The traditional bulbs or the new energy saving ones?
There has been a lot of development in the newer type. They have them in many different shades and they even do the adjustable dimmer type now

I started replacing burnt out ones with the new ones 4 years ago, and none of the new ones have burnt out yet; worth the $ in the long run.

Re: light bulb

New dimmer fluorescent bulbs have been recalled, removed from the store shelves, two manufacturers which sold them under several brand names, fire hazard, including the ones sold at Home Depot.
I can't find the web link now, but was given a copy of the recall notice when I was at Home Depot 3 months ago.
The dimmer models also flicker and buzz, seen it-heard it.

Back to your question.
Reveal incandescents over the dinner table on a dimmer, and in the bath vanity.
led nightlights in a few rooms.
CFL in many "covered" fixtures, but the light seems abnormally dimmed in a couple of them, for some reason, so I have to use a high wattage to get useable light.
CFL in some uncovered fixtures in closets and in table lamps.
NO CFL's in uncovered fixtures that can shine directly in my eyes, they are harsh and unnatural in color, not only annoying me, but driving my parrots bonkers.
I have 30w/50w halogens in the range hood.
I have r-30's in the recessed lights.
I have T-8 fluorescents under the cabinets.
CLF in the yard light.
Halogen in the Flood light.
34w 4 foot fluorescents in the garage.

A bill by Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, D-Van Nuys (Los Angeles County), would make the Golden State the first to make it illegal to sell incandescent light bulbs. Specifically, the legislation, which is set to be formally submitted in the Assembly in the next few days, would ban the old-fashioned bulbs between 25 watts and 150 watts by 2012.

Most of my most-used are now fluorescents. Overall I'm about half-converted. Some will stay filament-types, especially the porch and garage. Fluorescents start slow and burn dim when it's cold. Below about 10 degrees, they don't even light up.

Ya, let's all switch to CFL's. The landfills need more mercury.

The FL I just bought this past summer lit even when zero. And even though it took quite a while (maybe a minute or so) they looked to reach their full brightness. These are the oudoor "pigtail" in a "R" housing that simulate the common outdoor flood shape. So far this winter all the outdoor rated FL bulbs worked. I had one indoor bulb in an outdoor fixture that won't light below 20 or so.

There is a thousand times more mercury in a common thermometer than in a CFL. (how many have broken in your house and get put in the garbage?) The comparison is like thinking that pissing in the ocean makes a difference in the water level.

How many lightbulbs does the average family throw out every year? How many thermometers does the average family throw out every year? I don't ever recall throwing a broken thermometer into the garbage. Most thermometers are digital these days anyway...

I'm not going to waste any more time arguing about it, but I would be willing to bet alot of money the environmental impact of manufacturing and disposing of CFLs more than makes up for the miniscule amount of electricity they save.

Mark, I'm not going to argue the point. I sell light bulbs. My vendor gets regular visits from the EPA. Nuff said.

Do you guys use cfl because of environmental concerns or because it saves money?

Where I use them, has to do with neither.

Re: light bulb

I started using FL because they last. That saves me money. Then, when the rates started climbing, I found out that they save more money by reducing energy usage.

I don't know it they are environmentally better or not in the long run.
Could be worse for all I know.
Do it for convenience and cost savings.

Here in northern WI, our elec power comes from hydro, so ghg's are not in the picture.
Manufacturing and disposal are. The cost and pollution involved in both are a mystery. I don't know which one wins out.

Re: light bulb

The TOPIC, gentlemen, is light bulbs; what do you use?

It is not a political question or even a social question. Lets keep ON the Topic.
