if its a sailboat, it has everything you need right now. use the boom and halyard to lift the person in a bosun's chair from dock or water.....

Re: Lift for a disabled person

I must share this - Some months ago I went to one of our local marinas to launch. I stopped in the parking area near the ramp to get everything ready. Up pulls this old rusty white Ford van with two guys in it. They are pulling a ratty trailer with what looked like a 16' wooden Chris Craft that haden't seen any varnish since it was built. (You don't see old wooden boats in South Florida)<br /><br />The guy from the passanger side gets out - grabs a wheelchair from the back and goes to the drivers door. The driver manages to get into the chair with much maneuvering and wheels back to the boat. The other guy lifts him out of the chair so that the driver could grab the side of the boat. He lifts himself up and goes head first over the side and into the boat.<br /><br />The passanger side guy puts the wheelchair back into the van and backs the boat into the water. The boat looked so nasty that I thought it would sink. The passenger guy parks the trailer and returns to the pier by the boat. The driver guy fires up the motor (started right up & sounded as smooth as they come). They backed out smartly and headed out for Biscayne Bay.<br /><br />As I picked up my jaw from watching this I thought - What is this nonsense about a handicap being an obstacle to life?

Sorry for the delay in responding. All your replies are very much appreciated. <br /><br />The boat in question is a 31ft diving boat with twin outboards. It has a farily open deck. <br /><br />I'm thinking that the answer lies in a hoist similar to a mechanics engine hoist. With the exception that it wll have the ability to rotate from an inboard to an outboard position.<br /><br />My friend is a quadraplegic.<br /><br />Thanks again.

Re: Lift for a disabled person

DO a search on "DAVITS"<br />That is probably your best bet. <br />Can be Electric or manual winch.

Re: Lift for a disabled person

access is pretty easy with a couple homemade ramps.<br />lifting from the water is a bit more tricky...<br />good luck and well done!<br />just getting in open water is a great exp. for<br />them :)

Re: Lift for a disabled person

i think you have the right idea you need a hoist setup. the kind that hangs boats from a deck (small) engine hoist would work but you want a winch not a ram if you are going to make it manual.i dont know if you are wanting to put him in the water but maybe rock climbing harness of some kind would make it more comfy for him. they make hoists that go in the bed of a flat bed truck that can swing engines over the side but i dont think you been somthing quiet that heavy duity i am thinking some round tubing and a hand winch like on your boat trailer will do the trick if you can weld then tou can play with what you need to make it work just right.

If you're looking to build or convert something and use a winch type setup, I've seen electric winches with auxilary hand crank in Northern (used to be Northern Hydraulics), Harbor Freight or JC Whitney. I suppose some of the boat trailer electric winches might have this feature as well.
