Obviously this thread has sparked a lot of heated attention. However, it is everybody's chose to wear or not to wear their PFD while on any boat. I wear one as soon as I get out of the vehicle at the ramp. Reason, I can't swim without one on. Between never learning and now age, it makes total sense to wear it any time I'm on or near the water.

Seem some folks remember their youth and think about how great the could swim the last time. But age, weather conditions and even water temps hamper abilities for more folks in an accident then we allow ourselves to believe. And how many were sent to the water unexpectedly. So many possibilities exist on the water. Even the best swimmer in the world will drown if unconscious. So think before boating. It takes so little time to slip a PDF on and have a little more piece of mind.

Some boats are rockets on the water, and other can be caught in their way. And even a slow moving boat can be caught in some questionable situations very quickly. It happens all the time. Time to think safety isn't after the accident, but before. You maybe can see the shore line and even tons of people there. But they simply can't walk to you to help. JMHO!

Ok. The original question has been answered by Stumpalump in post #9. Not sure why the ? was asked since the OP did his own thing anyway. I "would not" use the OPs recommendation to wash them in a clothes washer. Follow the manufacturers instructions. If they don't tell you how to clean them, then clean by hand as everyone has recommended. It would be no different than floating in the lake except with a little soap. I thought pulling a kid around while wearing one was genius!

This thread has run it's course.......:deadhorse:

I was a certified lifeguard at one point (okay, it was a LONG time ago), and I put on my PFD before I set foot on the dock. One good knock on the head, or even a good twist of an arm, and swimming ability is compromised or even nonexistent. And that's in warm water.

My favorite PFD is the Jet Pilot side entry. It is thin and doesn't restrict any movement. When you spend that much on it you are less likely to let it get dirty also.

For general wear all the time on the bass boat... I like a self-inflating for comfort. The PFD locker (I dedicated the biggest storage compartment of the boat) has a good assortment of life jackets and throwables (2 throwables get velcro'd to the seat posts for fast access, right by the fire extinguishers, when the boat is on the lake)
For on my little sailboat which is likely to be flipped 3 or 4 times in an hour of fun on the lake... I wear a vest style similar to water-skiers.
