How does one determine what life jacket bouyance you need for your body weight or size?

If the life jacket is big enough to go around you and have some adjustablity left then it should have enough bouyance to keep you afloat.

A bulky Offshore Type I Ocean vest will have more lift than a type III. Offshore Type I must have at least 22 pounds of lift for and adult and turn you face up. I have seen some with 31 pounds of lift.

Type II near shore must have 15.5 pounds of lift for an adult and may not always turn an unconscious person face up.

Type III aslo must have 15.5 pounds of lift for an adult and a conscious person can turn their self face up.

So what is the Best Type PFD? I think for most it is the Type II because they are better than the Type III but a lot more comfortable than a Type I and more likely to be worn.

The new type V are also very good but must be worn to even count as a PFD/Life jacket.

Here is a link with more information.

Many will have the pounds of lift on the label.

Thanks guys. I followed the links Boatist provided and one had an actual weight calculation process to show how 20lb of flotation can support a 200 lb person.
