I would like to buy plastic 5 gal gas cans to carry on my boat. I need it to have a vent cap and a traditional spout. I am only finding non vented push release spouts that are very tricky to use. It has a spring that you compress to start the flow. Any idea where to buy a traditioal gas can that can still be legal to carry on?

Let me know when you find some! I HATE those stupid new spouts and they are about all you seem to be able to find nowadays.

ezmobee- I've had good luck cutting the spout off at the spring. Only problem is the spout is kinda short. The old flexible spouts were much better.

I see the old style 'non-safety' cans on Craigslist from time to time and try to get 'em fast.

You won't find vented gas cans in the usa any more..... The epa believes that a non vented can will recover the fumes from the gas tank and hold them to be recovered by the gas pump so they outlawed the production of vented cans. I have a couple old 6 1/2 gal cans and was able to buy some replacement spouts for them a couple years ago but I am dreading the day they die..... You may be able to buy a vented water can of the same material but it won't technically be legal for gasoline....

Edit I see this has gotten worse as of this year..... there should still be some out there but it appears they are not being manufactured any more

I didn't know that this is an EPA thing. I agree that the new jugs are a complete PITA. Such is life, I guess.

Your best place to find the old style jugs is at a garage sale or a mom and pop hardware store were there's probably not a huge turnover of stock.

Not EPA, but CARP.

Once California passed the law, the manufacturers chose not to make 2 different product lines.

Check out the race fuel jugs on the net, they look to have potential.

Also, I know of several people that have added a vent to their new fuel jugs. One guy uses a valve stem and cap, just remove the stem.

I like the Eagle 5-Gallon Metal Gas Can. I got it at Lowes.

There's no vent, but it doesn't need one. It has a big wide mouth spring loaded cap (kind of like a whistling tea kettle) and dumps the gas into the attached funnel, thru a hole in the side of the funnel. The cap also seals very well, and it's easy to control the gas flow.

Just position the funnel and open by pulling on the cap handle SLOWLY, to be sure you don't dump too much gas at first.

When I see a gas can on the side of the road I pick them up. Sometimes all that is good is the spout.
