Forgot plug twice-Check
Once on the trailer and the other was 1/2 mile from launch till we heard speakers under water, that wasn't pretty
Never take keys out of ignition-check
Dragging skeg would never happen because my trailer sits very high.I once drove 40 miles home with drive completely down and never once hit the road.
Got drunk and feel asleep in sun once-check
This all happened in my first month of my first boat.
Live and learn....I usually learn the hard way guaranteeing to never forget

Way to go Ez, that takes the biscuit. What I want to know is what won, the dock or the winch?

Dock. I had it winched so tight I had to back the trailer in deeper to get it untied. Real smooth.

Re: leaving my mark...

I hope you gave a sporting bow to the audience when you got back on dry land !!!...you had just completed a half gainer....tricky dive off of a diving board ....... next time , tuck in your knees and go for the full somersault...and go in feets firstus !..lol .... Some would pay a dollar to see that !

I smiled and waved, got into my boat and quickly said "get out of the way" (I wanted to drive my boat) she was trying real hard to contain herself and somehow uttered ok between her laughing, later she told me she couldn't wait to announce it on facebook, to families and friends alike, so I told her if she did I would announce on facebook the time when she had too much wine on the boat and missed her seat, at that time we had back to back seats not the captains chairs we have on our new boat so she really accomplished something missing a seat that well she had a choice of two stationary seats and missed them both. I wasn't successful in my attempt to keep my backflip off facebook though, I have nothing on the teenagers...

Re: leaving my mark...

Well after reading all of these moments, I now feel much better having done almost every one of them and some twice.
I have run out of gas, thinking the spare tank was full (only because I told the gas attendant to fill both-not) this is 9 PM on a large lake, and getting dark, we had all the beach towels up (bimini too) for our 4 hour sail/drift back to land. Arriving at some nice land owner?s back yard sea wall, he says let me guess, out of gas? I say yep, he hands me 5 gallons of gas and says you?re the third one this week. I handed him a $20 and thanked him.
Sank a jet ski, well almost, ripped the seal out of the power shaft to the impellor, nice boater stops as we are in the middle of Lake St. Clair (very big lake) allows me to cleat off and call for help. Sherriff shows up and asks if I have insurance, which I say, yes. He suggests I just cut it loose, I beg him to drag me in, and he does, at the launch he unties my dead ski, and it sinks to the bottom at the ramp, only 3-4 feet deep, but still very embarrassing. No more jet skis, I prefer to be on the water, not in it.
I have many more, but will pace myself.

Re: leaving my mark...

Oh yeah a personal favorite,
Wife dumped me in the drink "accidentally" once....check

Wife takes the boat off the trailer then I park the truck and trailer and she picks me up at the dock, first trip in a new to us boat with alot more bite, she comes in to pick me up and at the proper moment gives a little reverse while I jump at the proper moment into the boat perfect system right NO, I went from an 92 OMC 350 with a carb to a 2000 454 MPI with a Bravo III so wife hits reverse while I am airborne and the boat catches my front foot on the heel going the wrong way so I go ***** end over tea kettle and hit the water head first, upon resurfacing I was presented with a standing ovation from the ramp/dock crowd and my wife in tears....and no she wasn't upset about the whoops either

I am reminded of the Pilot's Prayer:

"Dear God, please don't let me screw up today. But if I do, don't let anybody see me do it."

I have done a complete head over heels flip in a parking lot when I tripped over one of those concrete things they use to keep you from pulling too far forward. I'm sure it was quite spectacular and should have rated at least a 9.0.

Re: leaving my mark...

This weekend was our first big weekend with a new to us boat. Saturday I drug the boat up the ramp with the out drive still down, wife was in the boat screaming at me the whole time. I didn't hear her until it was too late. That brand new prop USED to look good... Went to put the boat in the next day and almost whacked a lunch ramp sign backing down. Good thing the ramp we use at the lake is never very busy... I may get just good enough at this someday to be dangerous ...

I went to my favorite U.S. fishing lake today after reading this thread yesterday. Was amazed at the number of "skeg marks" in the concrete ramp there. Dragging the skeg must be a rather common American past time. Learn something every day.

Re: leaving my mark...

glad to see this thread is taking off. Was at the ramp yesterday and parked the truck, heading back to the boat when I watched a guy go to step on his fender to get something out of his 16'ish boat. He missed the fender and drug his shin down the fender.... OUCH! I acted like I didn't see him so he wouldn't be to embarrased.

Re: leaving my mark...

Being relatively new to boating- I went out on a friend's boat Saturday...

I was towing his boat to flats fish, never towed a boat in my life- played it safe and had a father of a friend at the ramp back it in for me- I'd rather be safe than stupid- especially being it wasn't my boat and he didn't feel comfortable backing in his own boat either; LOL!

So... he backs it in and I yell at my buddy "don't you need to release that strap?" , transom strap was still on- he had about 1" before water hit the top of the aft gunwale. Didn't even know how much I helped him out until I read this thread. LOL

After he was in, I got my truck back and parked the trailer, in doing so, I realized how much I saved myself looking like a jerk trying to back it into the ramp--- phew. LOL I got the hang of backing it in relatively quickly and adjusted, remembered a few years back working a flatbed trailer.

Anyways...

As soon as we got out of the channel and realized I forgot my sunglasses- (it was still morning)- no WAY I was going to do that to my eyes... We turn around and he pulls to a shoreline and I climb some rocks back to up my truck and snag them- in doing so, I lock my keys in the truck- mindlessly thinking I don't want to lose them in the water (lol!). I also drop off my cell as it was searching for service and I didn't want to drain the battery (or drop THAT in the water).

As soon as we get out I throw on some SPF 100 and a tank-top, I used the spray for the first time- thinking it would be easier, I positioned myself so the overspray went over the boat and didn't make a slippery surface- all was fine, repeated this every 2-3 hours...

Turns out my shirt rubbed just right with the front seat back to easily remove the spray-on sunscreen--- NEVER AGAIN, I'll be getting greasy and rubbing it in from now on--- I have about a 1ft blistered area on the outside bottom of each shoulder blade--- talk about PAIN.

As for my keys locked in the truck, I panicked for about 30 seconds before I remembered I had keypad entry on the driver's side of the truck! I never use it, but programmed it when I bought the truck. I'm just glad I remembered the code. LOL I'm also glad the truck battery wasn't dead or we'd have been stranded on a near empty dock with no cell service nearing nightfall.

Anyways, the day is almost over and we're one of two groups at the dock, I wave them ahead thinking we'll be a while trying to maneuver- I shocked myself and actually only misaligned the trailer once--- straightened it out, compensated and I swear it looked like I'd been doing it for 20 years. Hit the back tires perfectly before the waterline and he solo loaded via a short drift and wenched it on--- I'm sure it was just beginner's luck- but I'm probably just saving all of my major 'errors' for when I get my own boat. (hopefully very soon!)

Re: leaving my mark...

Last year me and a buddy went on a fishing trip about 3hrs from home. I loaded everything in the boat and put the gas tank in the back of the truck and away we went. Well we got to the lake and I told my buddy to grab the tank out the back of the truck while I was taking the strap off the boat. I heard him start laughing when he grabbed the tank and pick it up. He ask me if that was the motor I just converted to a fuel pump, and I told him yea and went to see why he ask and discovered I had grabbed the wrong tank. I had grabbed the pressure tank instead. I felted like a fool but I had saw a Walmart up the road and went there and bought one of the plastic tanks they sell for like 25 bucks! That saved the rest of the day even though the motor smoked because of the 2x oil mixture running thru it. While we were out on the water we did some WOT runs to make sure the fuel mix wouldn't foul out the plugs and it didn't so away we went for about 2 miles then the motor quit. It wasn't getting any fuel and I started checking everything. Tank was vented and tried to prime it but no luck. So we trolled in and I started looking for the problem and the pickup tube in my new 25 dollar tank was broke. What a day! Now anytime I go fishing I hook the tank up to the motor the night before just to make sure its the right one!
