I need to purchase 5 or 6 gallons of fiberglass resin. At $35 a gallon from Boat US this gets a little expensive. Where can I find it cheaper?

Thanks!

Greg
try an automotive paint supply store.might be cheaper.most marine store are pricy on that kind of stuff.what are you doing with that much resin? if you dont mind me asking.
cheap polyester resin is not really a bargain for doing repair's. it doesnt bond as well as the vinyl, and is more brittle. I personally only use epoxy for repairs, as the bond/strength is way better
I am replacing my floor and need to coat the wood with resin. The epoxy seems expensive, is it worth it?

I am probably only going to have this boat for 2 or 3 years before I get something bigger. I just want it to be nice for the next few years.

Thanks

Greg
the polyester is OK for coating plywood and even doing initial layups, although I prefer the vinyl-ester, but I would spring for some epoxy to do the re-bonding to the old glass, especially if your gonna abuse it
For only 2-3 yrs just about anything will work. Especially in climes like MD where it is too cold several mos out of the year for rot spores to live.

Use only styrene (not acetone or any other "thinner")to thin (10-15%)poly and do several penetrating coats on the ply. That will give a good seal but won't be long lasting like epoxy. Styrene will chemically link the coats for superior bonding to each other.
In most of the spots of wood that aren't being replaced, the resin coat is cracked so I think I will need to sand off the coat of resin and redo it anyway. So their will not be a lot of bonding between coats anyway. I will mix it with the styrene to be safe anyway though.

To mix it with the styrene, I should just mix up my resin with the hardner then add 10-15% of this styrene? Is that right?

Thanks

Greg
