Leaking Rivets in Tin Boat?

I have an early 70's Meyer Brand 14ft aluminum boat. I bought is sight unseen....I know.....what an idiot. Anyway, the bottom is pounded up good. I have a few rivets that are leaking and I am sure many others are ready to start. Is there a coating made for the interior of aluminum boats that can be rolled or sprayed on to cover all the rivets? I don't want to get into replacing the rivets if I don't have to. Any suggestions would help tremendously.

Thanks

Best solution: 2 good hammers and a good friend. I tightened all the rivets on an old aluminum several years ago this way. Never did leak again and made the boat feel solid and new. Just hold a hammer face on one head of a rivet and smack the other head of the rivet until it is tight. It looks like a bigger job than it is and you will be done in no time. Hammer out some dents while you are at it!

Alright I'll give it a whirl.First I have to find and unexpecting friend. I'll post results sometime this weekend. Thanks for the advise. I'll have to post a pic of the bottom. From years of river abuse and the trailer not set up right, she needs some adjusting. We'll see what happens!

The other thing you can use in a tincan is a product called Gluvit all of us Starcrafters swear by it :D. They sell it here in the iboats store.

Re: Leaking Rivets in Tin Boat?

Thank you all for your advise. Given my current budget I chose to purchase a tube of 3M 5200 and I temporarily sealed the few rivets that were giving me leakage. It seems to have worked for now. Once the weather turns for the worst around November here in MI, I will be stripping the paint inside the boat, repairing rivets, and I will apply gluvit to all rivets and seems. Once again I appreciate your feedback. As a first time leaking little metal boat owner I look forward to posting the end results of this project in the spring. Although I am sure I will need some more advise between now and then.

Around here I have seen quite a few folks use rhino liner on the inside and outside bottom of riveted boats. They cleaned it real good and rolled it on. That stuff is tough and will take a beating. You can buy roll on kits at Wally world for it.

This is not a good idea in a tincan there are several aluminum boat owners here who will attest to the fact rhino liner and tincans dooooooont mix :D.

It creates future problems...... bed liner has been found to seperate from the aluminum, makes future repairs a horrow show. Gluvit is the only "proven" sealant that lasts..... and is cheaper too.
