leaking lower crankcase head?

I have a Johnson 40 HP two stroke (J4OTTLENJ). It runs fine but is leaking oil around the lower crankcase head. I've been told that it could be as easy as removing the powerhead, removing the four bolts of the lower crankcase, installing a new O ring and resealing. Is this a job for a "do-it-yourselfer" or should it go to shop.

Welcome to iboats petelaw!

I would first ask....how do you know the lower crank seal is leaking? Are you getting a black discharge from the prop?

I have taken the housing off of the upper portion of the uotboard and there is oil in the housing. When running the motor, I couldn't see where the oil was coming from. When I shut it off, oil begins dripping outof the seam above what I believe is the crankcase head (four bolts connected to shaft that runs down the leg). I don't see any discharge from the prop.
