to replace the gimble bellows remove outdrive remove the exhaust bellows which gives access to the gimble bellows then replace the gimble bellows. Oh and by the way it is not neccessisary to use any type of sealer on the bellows i.e weatherstrip adheasive or trim cement if u will. I am speakin to u with 32 years experience.

Does it matter which way you install the bellow? I mean the sides of the bellows, does it matter which end connects to another? Example are those metal little clips on the rubber bellow. i installed that metal clip side to the metal piece that has the hing pins and other end of the rubber bellow i installed it to where the bearing is and clamped it down. I think it should be fine right? it can be installed vise verse?

You should have something marked on the bellows - something like "top / aft" or something similar. Does your bellows have two indentations on it?

Look on the bellows, you will see marks as referred in the last post.
Also you ought to have a long flexible 1/4" drive extension to tighten the clamp. It is kind of a 4" spring with 1/4" socket drive ends. Got mine at Sears. Without that it's a long afternoon. Watch the videos and read the instructions; it's important to put the clamps where instructed to save time and get proper retention.
And you will want a 12" long 1/4" wide straight blade screwdriver for reaching in the port side of the transom assembly to remove and replace the exhaust clamp on the transom.

My clamps are NOT 1/4" they are all 5/16.

And i watched many videos and i have never herd the word indentations mentioned and i also haven't seen any videos of installation of bellows.

I will do some reading on Google, thanks a bunch for the help. I will keep you up to date.

Re: leaking inside my boat from outdrive to engine

Ok finished installing the bellows.

One thing i dont understand is the exhaust bellow. My old exhaust bellow looked like this one. It was only clamped at one side....

I installed a new exhaust bellow which has the clamps on both sides. It was a pain to installed but i figured it out and installed it.

My question is, what is the difference between the two??????

It seems like with the old one my exhaust fumes would escape much faster and easier. With this double clamp method, now my exhaust fumes are going to go into my outdrive and then???? How does the exhaust hot air exit??? Through the suction holes at the bottom of the drive???? Very confused.

KO,

The one you had on there first was the exaust tube. The one you placed on there now is the exaust bellows.

The bellows is the original part that Merc. used on all Alpha 1 outdrives.

However, they found that in V8 applications, the exaust pressure could inflate the exaust bellows and cause it push on the driveshaft bellows. This could lead to a torn driveshaft bellows.

So they started using these rigid exaust tubes. Some folks install the tube for ease of installation. The exaust bellows/tube is not even 100% needed. The boat will still function without either on there. But it is reccomended to use the tube for V8's and the bellows for V6 and under. But the tube is fine for any Alpha application.

Your exaust gas that enters the bellows will exit thru the prop.

Re: leaking inside my boat from outdrive to engine

crap i have 79 v8 350 small block. Should i switch it back to the tube or just remove the clamp on one side where it connects to the drive?

Please let me know what you would recommend, thanks.

One thing i like about the double clamp is i think it extends the life of my shaft bellows. The tube, when running on hose muff's leaks hot exhaust air and heats up the bellow. This stresses the shaft bellow quicker then normal i think.

thanks for the clear explanation.
