Leaking Fuel Injector?

I have a 1998 70hp four-stroke fuel injected Evinrude that has a no start issue. When I pull the plugs, I notice that the #2 spark plug is soaked in gas. If I pull the plugs out overnight and put them back in the next morning, the motor will fire right up and run like champ - no hint of a problem. I can turn the motor off and turn it back on that same day and it will start easily. However if it sits overnight, the motor will try to fire a few times, but won't start, eventually it sounds like its not even firing anymore.

I've tested everything I can think of. All the cylinders appear to have good spark and the fuel system is pressurizing within specifications. My local mechanic also tested the compression which was within spec (I'll check it myself tonight). The single wet spark plug leads me to believe that I have an injector that isn't properly closing and with time (overnight) is flooding the #2 cyclinder. Also backing up my theory is the fact that it will run fine once the gas dries out of the cylinders.

Does the injector sound like the culprit or am I running down the wrong path? Could one flooded cylinder prevent the motor from starting? If it is a leaky injector, can it be cleaned/repaired or should it just be replaced?

Suggestion #1 is to swap the injector with one from another cylinder. If the problem moves you found the problem. Suggestion #2 would be to run SeaFoam in the fuel in hopes it cleans up whatever is causing it to stick (and prevent others from doing the same later on). Suggestion #3 is the fuel pressure regulator may be bad allowing fuel to be drawn into the engine.

Re: Leaking Fuel Injector?

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try taking a look at the suspect injector and possibly swapping it with another tonight. The pressure regulator tested fine, so I don't think thats the problem.

I would like someone's opinion on whether or not a flooded cylinder can prevent the motor from starting. I would think the other three cylinders would provide enough power to at least start the motor until the excess gas is cycled out.

Re: Leaking Fuel Injector?

suggestion two would also include a fuel rail pressure test, one cyl flooded would not cause a no start. however if the fuel rail bleeds off and has air in it starting may be difficult.
I have actually pulled the rail, wire tie the injector to the rail and cycled the fuel pump to look for leaking injecters.
all it is is an electrical on/off valve.
no voodoo here.
